what is the common range most people play at?
For me it seems 5 to 10 seems normal. Most of the original maps have open areas of like 18 or so. I have normally seen people run into the under 10 range without any issues.

A lot depends on the units used, but I think most players try for Medium Range of their primary weapons, so somewhere in the 5-14 range for 3025. Long Range is too hard to hit, especially when you'll almost certainly have terrain modifiers. Most maps, AFAIK, tend to require engagement at 15 hexes or less...some much less.
Of course, there's always going to be someone who feels he's outgunned at long range, who will try to close range to 6 or less. (I tend to be That Guy...).

Depends for my group on what we are trying to do, normally four to six map boards, averaging four most of the time. We have had a long run set of campaigns that have covered 20 or so map boards, but each battle was different set of terrain settings.
Also we have used our own map boards, size varying for the battle at hand. So roughly the fighting would range form 4 hexes out to 25 at the most. Never more then that.

got to thinking about the canon maps. I keep hearing about sitting back at range and had thought about it. there is no canon map that you can use an ac2 at full range. The trees block line of sight on almost all of them. The large hilltop one helps with that one, but other then that, I started thinking about the extra range on a few. Yeah, you can flip one over and use it as an open field.

I'll play anything from instant-action 8x8 2 on 2 or 1v1 with BA/Infantry support urban maps, to sprawling 75x75 double company vs. double company battles. Just because i'm crazy.

Even with MM speeding things up threefold, if not more, I don't think I'd have the time for a 75x75 company v company brawl.

Our map size on Dominion and Wars of Reaving has been set at a stating 50x50 hex map. This is analogous to a 3x3 mapsheet arrangement on table top.

I should add that I usually play on a 2-map layout. I'd like to play on 2x2 or larger, but my table isn't big enough...

2 by 2 is a good setup and you can fight a nice lance on lance on that setup.
