Overview: Licensed by Randam Mechworks, their G4 variant uses advanced Inner Sphere technology and Clan-spec parts to give the venerable Catapult a version worthy of the 3140's.
Capabilities: The Endo-Composite frame offers a lighter and less bulky option than classic Endo-Steel. The main weight save comes from the XL engine, allowing the addition of a pair of Snub-nosed PPC's and twin Artemis enhanced LRM15 produced by the Sea Foxes as well as the CASE II system that offers protection against ammo explosions.
The mobility of the original was retained including the jump jets, while the armour was increased overall. Fourteen double-strength heat sinks help the mech deal with heat effectively, though it can still overheat if pushed hard enough.
Battle History: The Catapult G4 has been purchased mainly by the Draconis Combine and Federated Suns. The AFFS mechs have proven popular in the recent fighting against the Capellans providing fire support and even leading attacks on some occasions, thanks to the excellent range mix offered by its weaponry, allowing for both short and long range combat.
Though not as capable as mechs of Clan origin, the Catapult can more than hold its own in its weight class, oddly enough it functions very well at ranges of around 200m, where both the LRM's and PPC's are still in short range whereas the enemy is at medium or even long range. Combined with fire and movement tactics the Catapult is a serious threat to those who assume it performs best at longer ranges as a Capellan Salamander pilot discovered to her surprise, when ambushed by a Catapult. The mech used terrain to jump from cover to cover, while keeping the enemy at short or medium range, while the Salamander was hampered by its own LRM short range. Badly worn down and unable to score any significant hits, the Salamander surrendered.
Deployment: A second and third production line have been set up by Randam to produce G4 Catapults for the Lyran Alliance and former members of the Free World's League. Recent political tension between Randam and the Capellan Confederation and licensing problems mean that while he Catapult is a popular Capellan mech, the G4 is very rare, those deployed with Capellan units being exclusively captured from Davion forces. As of this technical readout the prospects of these problems being resolved are very slim for the forseeable future.
Because the Republic shut down before the G4 entered full production only a small number are known to be in service with Republic forces. None have been spotted in units outside the Fortress Republic.
Variants: The G4 is a variant of the Catapult, though at least one Combine Cataplut is believed to be armed with Clan Large Pulse lasers instead of the PPC's.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors: Prowlin' Pete : This Catapult G4 has been competing successfully on the Gladiator circuits for little under a year now, scoring several kills. Painted Crimson Red with black tribal symbols, Prowlin' Pete is touted as a serious contender for the upcoming championships.
Additional: Unconfirmed rumors that Randam and Clan Sea Fox are collectively designing an even more advanced version mounting ATM launchers and a Clan-made version of the Snub-Nosed PPC have surfaced in some military circles, leading some to believe that an incorporation of Randam into the Sea Foxes might be the next step, which could give the Inner Sphere even greater access to Clan Technology and manufacturing.
