Will Conner was a Star Captain in the 37th Strike Cluster "The Blood Kits" of Delta Galaxy, and always had Warden tendencies. When he tested out of his sibko, his ‘Mech was an Ice Ferret and he defeated a Mist Lynx with a single ER PPC shot to the leg; the unfortunate MechWarrior he fought lost consciousness. His second opponent was in a Viper and a lucky shot overheated the Viper's engines and caused a massive explosion. The MechWarrior was able to punch out of his ‘Mech, but ended up breaking his neck on the fall. Incidentally, this is the MechWarrior that Will performed the Bloodstart ritual on. The last ‘Mech he ended up fighting was a Hellbringer . The firefight was brief and Will's ‘Mech was barely hanging together; it was stripped of all armor, the left arm was gone, and his torso was severely damaged to the point that shutdown was imminent. However, he managed to defeat the Hellbringer thanks to his superior speed and the rival pilot's arrogance in thinking he could bring Will down in a single volley; this quickly overheated his Hellbringer. As the Hellbringer was trying to get his heat under control, a couple of well-placed shots took out most of the torso, but the Hellbringer was able to override its safety protocols and fired one last time before Will made the kill shot. This damaged his ‘Mech too badly to take truly take part in the last fight. The Timber Wolf had defeated his sibko brother who piloted a Mad Dog , but not before losing an arm. That wasn't enough to stop the Timber Wolf from destroying Will's 'Mech. Based on his performance, Will was given the rank of Star Captain.

Soon, Will found himself nominated for a Trial of Bloodright. When the Conner died in a Trial of Possession, the Bloodright was held and Will took his Gargoyle to victory. However, despite this spectacular start to his career, Will Conner soon ran into some bad luck. He used to be a part of the 11th Wolf Guards of Delta Galaxy and was in command of a Trinary. He led his Trinary in victories against Clan Goliath Scorpion and Clan Jade Falcon, and won honor for him and his unit. But one day, a staunch Crusader named Gunnar challenged him to a trial of position for command of his Trinary. Will accepted and ended up losing badly. The first hit from Gunnar's Storm Crow hit the hip actuator on Will's Gargoyle and fused the leg so it would not move. The Gargoyle fell and although Will kept on firing, he lost within seconds of being knocked to the ground. Gunnar assumed command of the Trinary and Will was placed in the command of a Star under Gunnar.

This did not sit well with Will, so he was planning on challenging Gunnar in a new Trial of Position later down the road. Before that could happen though, Gunnar started making a lot of noise to attack the Inner Sphere and bring enlightenment to the barbarians who lived there. He ordered his Trinary to support the Crusader cause. Conner refused and instituted a Trial of Refusal. Gunnar accepted and brought an Executioner to the trial instead of the Timber Wolf he bid. His Executioner's name was "Timber Wolf" and so the council ignored the treachery. Conner brought a Nova to the fight. Despite all of his best efforts, Conner could not pierce the armor of the Executioner and was starting to overheat badly. With all the warning alarms going off in his cockpit, Conner missed seeing the Gauss Rifle of the Executioner line up with his ‘Mech, and it blew away his left arm. One of the Executioner's ER Large Lasers ripped a hole in his cockpit, and Conner lost his left eye. Meanwhile the other ER Large Laser destroyed his right arm. Defenseless, half blind and not willing to dishonor himself by resorting to physical combat, Conner took a knee and awaited the judgment of Gunnar. Gunnar did not kill Conner, but instead chose to humiliate him by asking the council to place Conner with the weakest Galaxy, Epsilon Galaxy. The request was granted and Conner was assigned to the Nega Garrison Cluster of Epsilon Galaxy. Conner strove to prove himself even with the dishonor of being placed in an Epsilon Galaxy. He retained his rank of Star Captain and was given a Star under the command of the loathsome Star Colonel Evon. After the invasion took place, the Nega Galaxy cluster was eventually used to garrison some of the worlds that Clan Wolf conquered.

Now the time is 3058 and Will Conner has become an elite ‘MechWarrior despite his status as a second-line unit commander. Both him and his star have fought many battles against the Inner Sphere, including trying to raid various worlds as well as a few Jade Falcon strikes. Despite his victories, he is treated more like an outcast each time he wins because he and his MechWarriors did not die in honorable combat. Conner also learned from the Inner Sphere MechWarriors he fought to use concentrated fire and physical attacks as well as ambushes. He treats his freeborn warriors with respect, which would have been unusual just a few years before; because of how he was treated by his fellow trueborns due to losing an eye as well as his status as a Trinary commander, he has rethought his own attitude regarding those considered lesser by the rest of his Clan. Conner decided that he had no intention of rejoining the front line unit. The Wardens in his Clan were getting weaker, which he could tell. The Crusaders were gaining momentum and no matter what he did, he was not considered successful in any missions anymore, regardless of the outcome.

Conner spent about a year in planning a rebellion with his fellow Star-mates who were all freeborn. They were finally slated for some upgraded ‘Mechs, this time Inner Sphere refits instead of old Star League-era ‘Mechs. After they received their new ‘Mechs, they were given orders to drop with the 9th Wolf Guard Strike Cluster. The new mission was to hit Ueda in the Free Rasalhague Republic, effectively starting a new invasion and breaking the Treaty of Tukayyid. There was nothing that Conner could say to prevent his Crusader Clan from attacking the Inner Sphere again. But it did finally provide an opportunity for Conner and his Star to rebel against their Clan. When they landed on Ueda, they were given orders to guard the rear of the invasion force. They were tasked to protect a Union Class DropShip known as the Fallout. This was finally the opportunity that Conner needed. When the Trinary he was with had split up to take different positions, Conner made his move. He had his personal techs surprise and hijack the Fallout, and "persuade" the crew to join their rebellion.

Conner then ordered the comm officer to broadcast the intentions of the Wolves to the Free Rasalhague Republic military. They gave them their locations, and their exact strengths. The Wolves of course heard the transmissions and had the other two Second-line Stars go to investigate Conner's Star. Conner hid his Star's signatures behind the DropShip's and when the first star arrived, they could not locate Conner. Then the DropShip opened fire. Conner moved his star to support the DropShip and within seconds, the enemy Star was destroyed. Conner sent a warning to the other Star to back down or be annihilated. Star Commander Carns refused, determined to win glory for herself by destroying the traitors. Once again, with the help of the DropShip, the second Star was quickly outmatched and utterly destroyed. Conner had his troops load up into the DropShip and sent them on a course towards the Rasalhagian lines.

Wary of their new ally, but relieved that they had extra support, the Rasalhague commanders welcomed the additional help. They made the outcast Wolves an offer they couldn't refuse. If they helped them push back the invading Wolves, they would be given transportation off planet and allowed go to Outreach to contact the Wolf's Dragoons. The Rasalhagian government would also give them their recommendation.

This is the story of Conner's Howlers.

Thanks to BobTheZombie for helping me edit my work. I felt that the previous ending was stretched as well. Hope this one sits better for everyone else. It still is a bit of a stretch, but more believable than it was.

The idea behind it is I wanted a different sort of merc unit that had clan origins that wasn't Wolf's Dragoons. Plus I never used Inner Sphere refits or second line units, and this was a perfect opportunity to create a storyline where those mechs would be the ones available to the unit.

Hope you guys enjoy the little story.

So you went with a Union class dropship instead of the Overlord? Interesting.
I would asks if you salvaged any parts or even partial mechs from the 2 stars that you defended against. It would give you some sort of start for additional mechs without having to do the full innersphere salvage, or at least give you some spares for clan build components that would be extremely expensive for a new unit to try and buy.

The only real 'issue' with the story is the clan attack after the treaty. From the things I have seen, they could do whatever about the treaty line, but would not attempt anything below it since it would be a major loss of honor for breaking he treaty. But the Jade Falcons did have the red corsair run through the commonwealth, so it is possible. A raid would be more reasonable, as the smoke jaguars did not mess with Wolcott when the combine won the trial of refusal for it. But this is just a more canon concept.

Still an interesting backstory.

The only person that has to be happy with the story is you, wolf.
Now asking for advice is a can of worms.

Been a while, but does the Union have enough fighter capacity for the original amount of fighters you were going to run with? Granted you can store them, but that kinda defeats the purpose of having them.

No, I don't mind the editing at all.

I had to drop the fighter escort I was originally planning on. I believe the Union dropship can hold 15 mechs. Perfect for a trinary. It had close to 500 tons of cargo space, but making aeros take up cargo space is a little silly, like you said.

In case anyone is interested, I have a story starting about the Grim Determination. It will be based off of battles against the bot in MekHQ. You can follow the stories through the link.

Yeah, just looked it up on the wiki. The union-c carries a full trinary of mechs, but removed the 2 fighter bays to do it. It's a shame, cause even a single point of fighters would come in very handy.

I would suggest you increase the size of your starting force and lose a few in battle, as I'm not sure the clans would waste a union on a single star, or was the other 2 stars on the same ship with the howlers?

Then again if they were guarding the ship, the Overlord could be used as well. Just a thought.

I know, the fighters could have been put to good use. The dropship Conner came on carried the other two stars of second line ' mechs as well. They were all a part of the same trinary. They were all assigned to guard a different area. Conner got lucky (by me writing it) and got to guard the dropship.
I like your Overlord idea

But I just couldn't bring myself to give them that anymore when I started putting more thought into the storyline.

I can see that. Just remember that once if you gain enough units to fill the ship and need transportation. Dropships are not cheap or easy to get. This is true if you do get any fighters. You will need to hire another dropship to carry them.

Now I can definitely agree with not having a jumpship or warship. That would be too much to start with.

Though a good way to start off with the fighters might be have them being repaired after being damaged in the fight to get to the planet itself. When you leave the clans, they were not yet fixed.
Also gives you some supplies, such as some parts for the mechs, as well as some replacement pods.

If it is still set up, it is 50,000 c-bills to jump ANY sized dropship, but more then that to hire alot of dropships. But this is just a sneaky way to get you to upgrade the ship.

If you are looking for a possible campaign, I had the thought of having a local planetary commander decide the dropship and forces the Howler's have would make a fine addition to their forces. Granted it is kind of tried and true, but the unit could have to wage a guerilla warfare scenario to gain their stuff back and clear their name.
Or being attacked by a clan hating unit that the unit 'stole' a contract from for defending a planet or location.
And the ever present clan units that vow to clean their clans honor by destroying the bandits that fled with property stolen from their unit. Or another clan ready to show up the wolves by destroying the unit themselves shaming the wolves for not being able to handle it.

But my guess is you have already thought along these lines.

Those are all good ideas. I haven't thought of anything yet for them as I've been working on the Grim Determination. I will take those into consideration, maybe write some stories for them as well.
So sometime soon I will give the exploits of Will Conner and post it for all to see. Well, at least for the ones who want to.
