Overview: Johnson 'MechWorks, Inc has long been known or oddball designs, so it is no surprise that throughout the history, the design team has spent a great deal of time studying the Inner Sphere's most unusual and unpopular 'Mechs. Of particular interest back before the Fourth Succession War was the JM6-S JagerMech.
The JagerMech makes a decent support unit owing to the extreme range and low heat output of its weapons, but the pathetic armour coverage for its size make it a liability on most battlefields. In 3028, the company founder, Alvin "Kamikaze" Johnson set out to see if the design could be improved.
What began as a design of a Field Refit Kit soon evolved into a completely new design, christened the Upton. While most JagerMech mods began by replacing the AC/2s with more potent weapons, Johnson, true to form, took a different angle. The AC/5s were replaced with AC/2s, cutting long range firepower nearly in half, but extending the range and freeing up tonnage for additional armour.
Still not satisfied with the results, Johnson decided to scrap the Refit Kit idea and go with a completely new design. Long Range was still light. Armour, while much improved, was still not substantial. And secondary weapons were inadequate. To address these problems, Johnson increased tonnage to 70 tons and reduced speed, reasoning that the range of the Autocannons limited the importance of mobility.
Armour was increased to 12 full tons, fully double what was carried by the original JagerMech. Two additional Medium Lasers were added to deal with threats in close, and a 5th AC/2 was added in the Torso.
Capabilities: Like the JagerMech that inspired it, the Upton is a "Light Support" 'Mech. While overall damage is low, the range of the weapons give the design decent tactical flexibility in spite of its sluggish speed. More durable than the JagerMech, and better armed at close range, the Upton is also cost-effective in that it is much more likely to survive a battle.
Variants: The only listed variant is the UPT-6L, an upgraded model released in 3075.

Overview: When the schematic for the UPT-4N Upton was recovered from the JMInc. archives, the design team was quick to start work on an upgraded version. The result of their efforts was the UPT-6L.
The upgrade is pretty straight forward. An Endo Steel chassis saves 3.5 tons for improvements. The Arm-mounted ACs are upgraded to LB-2X models for improved range and accuracy. The ammo in the torsos is protected with CASE technology, and the lasers were upgraded to Extended Range models. Since the bulky LB-X was too large to replace the older AC in the Center Torso, the original weapon remains, but a new ammo bin was placed in the Head, intended to hold either Precision or Armour Piercing ammo, depending on need and availability. Finally, a fifth ER Medium Laser was added, this one covering the 'Mech's vulnerable Rear firing arc, and the Heat Sinks were upgraded to Doubles to handle the increased close-range heat load.
Variants: One variant, the UPT-6XL, was proposed to deal with the Upton's primary drawback: it's low speed. The 210 Fusion Engine is upgraded to the more powerful 280 XL, increasing the speed by 25% and freeing up a ton which can be used either to add armour or to install CASE II in place of the older CASE.
Since this upgrade results in a price tag slightly more than double that of the -6L, it is not a strong candidate for mass production.

MY BLURB: I enjoy playing around with a JagerMech...people look at the configuration and dismiss it very quickly, but it's effect on a 3025-tech battle can be significant...if it survives long enough. I suppose a more rational person would reduce the speed to boost armour, but keep the original's AC/5, rather than doing...this.
The UPT-4L is slated for an upcoming 3039 Lance match.
Peace is that glorious moment in history when everyone stands around reloading.

Interesting and I could see someone in one of the Houses going hey this looks great, lets' get these to the troops! And we end up with another Sgt. York.
