Overview: One fact about JMinc. that is not widely publicized is that they work closely with many small Mercenary units throughout the Inner Sphere, often supplying them with 'Mechs for use in minor engagements in order to collect actual battle-test feedback rather than just simulator and practice-field data. For the most part, the 'Mechs in question are refit models, or 'Mechs otherwise designed to closely resemble familiar designs so as not to raise questions about the origin of unique machines.
One such redesign is the JMI-3XL JagerMech; although rather than being "gifted" to a Merc unit, it is owned by the design firm and piloted by Myron "The Mechanic" Blackstone, one of Johnson 'Mechworks' senior test pilots and technicians.
While the JMI-3XL began life as a standard production model all but mothballed by the F-C military after suffering heavy damage in the Fourth Succession War, very little of the original 'Mech actually remains. For starters, the 'Mech's framework has been replaced with a much lighteer Composite skeleton (a feat VERY few techs can perform outside a production facility), and a Compact Cockpit replaces the original to save space (and to uniquely suit the 'Mech to it's diminutive occupant). Additional tonnage is saved with the use of an Extra-Light Fusion Engine, and by replacing the standard pair of Medium Lasers with a single Extended Range model.
The tonnage saved was put to use installen Actuator Enhancement System in both arms to improve accuracy, and adding extra ammo bins to accomodate a variety of specialized ammo. The resulting machine is surprisingly accurate and effective, and, as a final surprise, with armour at near-max, it's also extremely durable.
Capabilities: Boosted accuracy and boosted armour on their own make this JagerMech a much more significant battlefield presence than the original, but the primary design idea behind this upgrade is the additional ammo bins. With enough bins to support the reduced capacity of specialized rounds, the JMI-3XL is intended to be outfitted with Precision ammo for even greater accuracy against fast-moving targets, or Armour-Piercing rounds for heavily armoured targets.
The modifications address the infamous design's chronic weaknesses: ineffective long-range firepower, insufficient close-range to defend itself against fast-moving 'Mechs attempting to close inside Minimum range of the primary weapons, and hopelessly thin armour plating. The accuracy of the AES and Precision ammo allow the 3XL to not only hit more frequently at longer ranges, they also allow a pilot under pressure to bring the ACs to bear effectively inside their standard engagement range. The increased protection of 75% more tonnage devoted to armour and an upgrade to Heavy Ferro Fibrous allos the 'Mech to weather far more return fire. And finally, the use of Armour Piercing rounds give the 3XL a much greater chance of inflicting a critical hit without first stripping away the armour. An against the massive protection of Hardened Armour, it's offensive power is effectively doubled relative to 'Mechs not equipped with such ammo, making it the equal of many of the deadliest machines on the modern battlefield.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors: As there is only one JMI-3XL JagerMech currently in existence, and that 'Mech has only been piloted in combat by Myron "The Mechanic" Blackstone ("Why do they call him 'The Mechanic?' "Because he's a mechanic!"), the list of notable 'Mechs and 'Mechwarriors is obviously very short.
Blackstone is a former tech-turned 'Mechwarrior-turned Bounty Hunter, now in the employ of Johnson 'MechWorks, Inc. as technician and test pilot, who will frequently accompany a Merc unit on active duty in order to get "Real Combat" experience with a prototype 'Mech. At a diminutive 147 cm (4' 10") tall and a slight 45 Kg (99 lbs), he is perfectly at home in the JMI-3XL JagerMech's compact cockpit -- a fact that is perfectly illustrated by his impressive track record with the 'Mech, racking up numerous kills in a relatively small number of engagements.

MY BLURB: Always enjoyed tinkering with the JagerMech. This particular mod started out with pondering the effects of removing the Med Lasers and using the spare tonnage for additional armour. Turned into an all-out upgrade, and a fun one at that. The listed assortment of specialty ammo is a suggestion only; the 'Mech can, of course, be equipped with mission-specific ammo.
So...who wants one? 10% discount for the first 5 buyers...

Saves 3 tons vs a TC for the same weapons on this design.

Never really liked the Jagermech. The light armor and weapons package just struck me wrong. Might be the 2 mls for fighting at close range seemed underarmed. But as I said before, most battles if have played where the others rushing in for physical combat.
This update does make me think about using one now. Though I don't know about the small cockpit. I know it was used to get some tonnage, and the fluff says the mechanic was a small person, but for production, I just don't see many people buying it. Feeling like you are in a casket fighting is something that kills morale. Maybe some find comfort in feeling protected by the materials used to build it. Just an over all feeling, nothing meant to take away from the design.
Does the composite structure take any crits? The wiki states it was designed to be a less crit version of endosteel, but doesn't list if it takes any or not. It does say the structure is a little weaker then normal.

Composite structure is fragile...it takes 2x regular damage (i.e. for each point of damage, mark of 2 circles). So you REALLY don't want to stick around on the battlefield once the armour is breached.
In the up side, the tonnage saved gives more added protection in Armour than you lose in Structure, so it's a net gain in survivability, but still something you need to be careful with.
Got me thinking though...I should compare that to Endo + Light Ferro Fibrous and see which comes out better.

Ok...downgrading to Light Ferro Fibrous and using the free crits to replace the Composite with Endo Steel.
Armour coverage reduced by 30 from 208 to 178. Increase in damage absorption by Internal Structure equivalent to 55 points.
So technically the Endo/Light Ferro combo is more durable (so more damage for Total Destruction), but the Composite/Heavy Ferro combo takes more damage before going internal (so fewer critical hits).
Endo Steel variant is slightly cheaper, by about 120,000 C-Bills on an 11,000,000 C-Bill 'Mech, so pretty insignificant.
Personally, I would prefer to risk the fragile Internal in order to keep more damage to Armour. Others may disagree.

Had a radical idea go thru my head, and wanted to see if it had any merit.
Make this a fire support mech by changing the ac 5's to ac 2's, drop a ton of ammo, and add in a c3 master. Put in some fluff to have some fake weapons ports, or go along the penetrator's idea of a sliding door, so a variant that can be produced would have c3 slave with extra electronics, with some extra weapons to cover the minimum range of the ac 2's, like maybe some ersls or something like that. Hell thought about an extra heat sink or two with doing the variant while typing this. Help cover the extra weapons.
Might have to move some ammo into the arms to open up the crits, but let's face it. The arms go, there is no reason to have the ammo.

Your comparison is what I did when I came up with some of my WoB prototypes to their Celestial mechs. The two playtest battles showed that some of the combos of composite and Ferro and other armors made for interesting end results, some good some not so good.

I have toyed with a 4xAC/2 variant in the past...I usually went with a TC instead of the C3 Master, but it's definitely something I can play around with.

More of the few times I have used it, I have not gotten the gain out of it, meaning that what you get for it didn't alter the battles outcome and thus in my experience the system/item didn't help. I can say the same of some of the other items out there like the Nail Gun and the Taser as well.

If you do try the c3 master, make sure your other units have the slave.
Figure a well placed company person would allow you to do some hurt on the person, though the ac 2's are not that bad. But if you have some other units that can use it well, then you will teach them to avoid you. Hopefully.
I feel for Karagin in this as I have almost always had back results from lrm packs. If I can get 3/4ths of them to hit, I feel lucky. Most of the time it is around 1/4 to 1/3. I hated that, when using the lrm 20 and barely hitting to begin with, then to have like 9 missiles hit. Might be why I like the ppc for long range shots.

Do you have the same experience with Targeting Computers?

No, that thing has never been an issue, since you either have the folks that want to play the games of targ and pulse when the rules allowed the bonus of two to mix for called shots or you have those who use it to get the -1 over all for aiming at the target, not much to figure out here with this one.

The AES on this design is for the weapon accuracy bonus...but with the ACs being so heavy, it does the same job as the TC, only for less tonnage.
