------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ==Overview:== The story of the Firestorm starts with Bob. Bob works in the accounting department of Norse-Storm Technologies, Inc. One day while doing what all accountants normally do in accounting, Bob discovered something interesting.
While looking at the sales of the company's Maelstrom battlemech, he saw that sales of that particular mech never went up, nor did it go down. That is to say the sales were never exceptionally good or bad, the Maelstrom did recieve great reviews upon it's unveiling, but the few units built each month did pay the bills. To say the least, the sales of the Maelstrom were mediocre.
Baffled by this, Bob went to his friend Steve. Steve was a technician that worked on the manufacturing line. When he saw the information Bob presented him, he too was confused. Bob and Steve went to Steve's supervisor for answered, but he only replied to get back to work.
Undeterred, Bob and Steve set out to find the truth. They dug through mountains of data; reviews, personal testimonials of Mechwarriors who piloted the machine, combat reports and battle logs. Everything was as it should of been: "The Maelstrom was an new design carrying on the revolutionary line of Battlemechs that started with the Marauder and its hunched-over, pod-like torso, and the unique ball-and-socket construction."
"So then, why was the Maelstrom still doing so mediocre?" Bob asked Steve.
Steve scratched his chin for a moment and replied with a laugh, "Could it be because of the cost or actual performance of the design?"
Bob wasn't laughing. Steve looked at Bob and suddenly it dawned on him too. The expression between the two men was like that one morning hangover back in their college days during hazing week- about the night before they swore they would never talk about again.
Bob and Steve poured over the actual design specifications of the Maelstrom and their hunch of correct. The two gentleman again went to Steve's supervisor with this new piece of information. The green look on the supervisor's face was very similar to Bob's and Steve's expression when he found out.
The supervisor went to his supervisor, who in turn went to their supervisor. This process repeated half a dozen times more until it made it's way to the CEO. The CEO oddly had composed expression. "Get everyone together who found this out."
So, down the management line it went, all the way to Bob and Steve. Everyone gathered in the office.
The CEO asked, "How do we fix this?"
All the men in the room started to shout at once, and then argue about different opinions and ideas.
It was Bob who raised his hand. "I have in idea."
==Capabilities:== The Firestorm looks pretty much like the rest of its pod-torso and ball-and-socket-construction lineage. It was designed as a lower cost alternative to the Maelstorm while offering more combat capabilities.
The Firestorm is a seventy ton heavy mech capable of standing toe to toe with most new modern mechs, including Clan designs. It is equipped with a 280 VOX standard engine capabile of pushing the machine to 64.8 km/h and just over 85 kms/h when it's MASC system is engaged. Along with the speed capability, the mech is equipped with four HildCo Model 11c jump jets capable of lifting the mech for 120 meters. 12 double heatsinks keep the machine cool, while 12 tons of Starshield light armor give ample protection.
Despite being 5 tons lighter than most of it's brethren, it still packs just as much fire power. It's primary weapons are two Cyclops X11 ER large lasers and 4 Defiance P5M medium pulse lasers as secondary armament. A Buzzsaw AMS provides defense against missiles.
The Firestorm can also act as a heavy scout thanks to its speed and Beagle Probe. A TAG unit can bring down Arrow Missile fire on any hidden units it detects.

I was looking at the Maelstorm and thought that it was over heatsinked. Fiddling with the design, you could take the Maelstrom and drop it to 50 or 55 tons and loose some heatsinks, it would still be just as effective. I went a different route to make something more unique. I wrote the Capabilities sections as it should be read similar to if you listened to the Narrator of the Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy.

I like it, I like it a lot. Reminds me of a heavier, slower, more versatile Ostol. Lots to do with this design. Sturdy, too, with a standard engine. Hell, I'd want to pilot it if it was an option and I were an actual Mechwarrior.
