If even a single BT faction goes with some flavor of Hi-Lo mix, the machine gun will remain in service.

Canonically, every faction does do with their low-tech ConvFighters, tanks, and infantry serving in the same factions as their high-tech cousins: fusion engined Battlemechs, Aerospace fighters and shock troops in fully armored suits. The guns can be manufactured just about anywhere, the ammunition can be assembled just about anywhere, and damaged components can be repaired or replaced just about everywhere with minimal infrastructure compared to gauss rifle or pulse laser replacements.

AP GRs and SPLs for your 3100s era top-of-the-line fighting vehicles, MGs have you covered everywhere else.

Well, in TacOps, there a optional rule that allows for any machine gun (not in array) to be fire rapid fire. This would increase the damage (and heat generated) for any gun. It would help boosting damage when you really need it.
When it hits the fan, make sure your locked, loaded, and ready to go!
