ICE Changes the 55 Fuel Cell for a more reliable 40 ICE, slowing it down but reducing costs while removing the troublesome FCE also removes the Gas Hog and Poor Performance quirks
Lugh M Modernized variant with a more reliable 55 Fuel Cell powerplant and a fully protected turret assembly, removing the Gas Hog, Poor Performance, and Exposed Weapon Linkage quirks. A modernized transmission gives it the Power Reverse quirk
Ultra Lugh Exchanges the LB-X AC with an Ultra variant. The advanced AA targeting computer is usually removed too.
LRM Exchanges the LB-X AC with a LRM-20 and 1 ton of ammo, but loses the advanced AA targeting.
SRM Exchanges the LB-X AC with 5 SRM-4s and 1 ton of ammo, but loses the advanced AA targeting.
-------------------------------------------------
The Lugh is a light, cheap anti-aircraft platform designed in the 2900s to cheaply supply basic anti-aircraft capabilities to security and garrison forces. The Lugh accomplishes this by stuffing a lightweight 55 Fuel Cell Engine onto an ultra-light truck chassis and minimal armoring, allowing the Lugh to carry a 25mm LB-2 X AC in a turret mount.
While the Lugh nominally has a single-man crew, in practice a second member needs to be introduced to operate the autocannon. To increase the gunner's visibility, the Lugh has an open-top turret mount. Although this does increase the gunner's situational awareness, it makes him more vulnerable to return fire from aircraft, other vehicles, or even close-up conventional infantry. Lugh gunners have an extremely high attrition rates as a result to the point that some units actually have several trained gunners for every Lugh who draws straws to determine who gets the honor of actually fighting in the Lugh every battle.
The Lugh's powerplant also proved to be troublesome, with the 55 FCE being fuel inefficient and sluggish to get up to power necessary to maximize its velocity. This was often got around by exchanging the engine with a more reliable 40 ICE found on some versions of the Pandur Tankette.
The Lugh lacks the stopping power of heavier AA weapons like the LB-5X, LB-10X or the HAG series (in fact the HAG/40 is heavier than the Lugh itself), and is considered barely adequate for dissuading conventional fighters or light VTOLs. Still, the Lugh proved to be exceptionally easy to manufacture and maintain, and while one or even two may not be of any real concern to heavier aerospace craft, a full company of 12 isn't difficult to procure and may cause some pause. After the end of the Clan invasion, the Lugh became one of Clan Diamond Shark's top exports to the inner sphere.
In 3080, clan Diamond Shark/Sea Fox began to offer the Lugh-M upgrade program. The new Lugh was virtually identical to the original except for the turret assembly, which got rid of the open-top arrangement and replaced it with complete armor coverage. The 55 FCE and transmission coupling was exchanged for a more effective, reliable model, getting rid of many issues of the 2900s model.
