The Aphid and Greenfly are general IS dark-age designs.
The Aphid was first built by the Lyrans to replace their aging Warrior H-7 Attack VTOLs, which had been in service for nearly 150 years. The Aphid uses a very similar chassis design to the Warrior but mounts a specially developed chin turret which carries a light PPC and an ER Medium Laser tied to a targeting computer for improved fire control, in addition to twin light machineguns. The enhanced firing arc, augmented protection, and new weapon systems vastly improved the Aphid's effectiveness over the warrior while retaining a price tag of under a million C-Bills, ensuring mass production as a standard IS helicopter.
The Greenfly is a bloated Aphid designed to compete with the DI Multipurpose Helicopter. While the Greenfly was generally though to be an equivalent to the DI Chopper while also being cheaper, the design was rejected in favour of the Defiance design for reasons unknown, although some speculate that the industrial powerhouse Defiance Industries had backroom dealings with the Lyran Armed Forces.
Both designs proliferated through the inner sphere at large when in 3102 a clerk managed to "lose" the blueprints. Less than a year later, Aphid and Greenfly copies were being produced and sold within Draconis Combine territories, and from there they proliferated throughout the rest of the inner sphere.
