The following is from Box No. 1660 – Battletech Solaris VII – The Game World – Players Book – Pg. 58 – The Steiner Stadium.

“As construction neared completion, (by Nashan Diversified), workers began to install a lattice of monofilament wires around the arena floor. A system of relays and unusual circuit components linked these to the stadium’s main power lines ….. (a) power lattice, referring it only as the ‘detonator grid’…. When testing began … the grid actually detonated missiles …. while powerful magnetic fields flung shrapnel away… The grid also seemed to drain the force of energy weapons in some fashion …. “

“ Steiner Stadium’s detonator grid remains one of the most fascinating pieces of technology in the Inner Sphere…. It has yet to be duplicated, for the technology is part of Star League era lostech”.

They went on to explain that due to the amount of power it consumes it is impractical for a Battlemech. It also made suggestions that Wolf’s Dragoons and Blackwell development are experimenting with a similar system as a means of containing the plasma in a fusion engine.

The question I would like to ask is “why no one weaponised this technology?’ – for Dropships? / Warships? Also for important Capitol buildings, and factories, throughout the realm(s)?

Dropships – still not enough power?

Warships – they should have a similar power to a city – so maybe I should have been added as shields for their warships? (….. Shields up Mr. S______ ….?)

Would it not have been studied by NAIS, post-unification of the LA and FS and then reverse engineered to provide the FC with a battlefield advantage / security to major cities etc.

Your thoughts regarding this topic would be very much appreciated?

A few have denied the detonation grid for the steiner arena, so that is part of the problem.
I'm glad you brought that information and it's source forward.

It was also supposed to drain energy weapons from passing thru it, allowing live audiences to watch the match right there.

But like alot of things, it seems to be misplaced as it is too powerful to be used, except in the major storylines, like the SDS.
Honestly, I could see it used to protect things like the house palaces from orbital bombardments and such. They would have more then enough power generation to make sure that was done.

And even more odd, the clans never developed this technology. Protect the repositories after the Wolverines nuked the one to get them destroyed. Maybe not the entire building, but at least the samples themselves.

But then those important buildings would not have fallen during orbital bombardments and even land assaults, so the entire theory of the IS being in the stone age for war would pretty much be negated.

But I would think either it or something else like it will show up in the future to protect the next antagonist when they need to get a new war going.

Star league – with Detonator Grids – we know it was during the Star League that this technology became available …. Thus how could this technology changed the game …. (the writers clearly did not understand what they let loose by bringing this into the game – and the ramifications this could have had throughout Battletech gaming history).

With planetary Detonator Grids on all House Capital Worlds, including Terra

Major cities, industrial plants, satellite space stations, satellite manufactories for Jump-ships / Warships, station built upon lunar surfaces etc.

During the initial succession wars - do these Detonator grids shield them from the worst weapons available? Nuclear armaments – as the grid detonates the warhead when it comes within proximity of the grid – what next? The grid survives or destroyed – if it is destroyed then follow up weapons can get through? Or could we say these Detonator grids now make nuclear armaments obsolete?

Thus, is it “something else” that can get through with only a conventional weapon system – OR – it requires a ground assault that on contact with grid will allow another grid to penetrate? – OR – can only A warship’s weapon be able to penetrate with a single pin point blast of energy over 5 minutes or 5 hours to overload the shield?

However you look at it shield technology would alter the entire history of the IS and that of technological level of the IS.

In 3025 all sides could still have warship fleets - Technology is still comparable with that of the Star League era with some advancements in some areas– with shields and advanced weapons that will allow you to penetrate their shields with only conventional warheads?. Technology would not be limited to that of a 21st Century Technology Level – This could add to the game – huge fleets battling it out – aircraft carries, destroyers, cruses of all shapes etc. – mercenary / pirate fleets …..
On the ground shields in battle are considered a good thing – stray shots don’t kill civilians / damage vital companies etc – thus post combat you will take over a relatively intact would (excluding agriculture not protected by shields ).

Thus all sides agree - capture the world, that area of space, and you gain control of the resources behind the grids.

Thus re-writing the entire history of the IS ….

Thus we can only say now that the grid was a R&D project before it was buried due to the war with Amaris – then found once again by chance and put into the Stadium “as a play thing”. Though now R&D Teams are working very hard to reverse engineer it and have it applied to Key, cities, factories, warships etc. – thus going from there ….. a brave new world (Universe).

This technology should/could have been included into IS history –for example the Clan’s - Jaguar and Nova Cat attacking Luterin – how this could have slowed them up & protected he palace itself etc. ….. endless possibilities …………………

The Mechwarrior Scenario Pack Unbound gives you a Battletech version called the Blue Shield...

Thanks, I did not know such tech existed.

Consider the differences though …

The Blue Shield – is for a Mech, Vehicle, Infantry, aerospace fighter only and is only used against PPC fire and is extremely unreliable (considering the duration it can work)

The Detonator Grid however deflects all known ordinance be it energy based, missile or gauss on its own - and could potentially cover a very large surface area – depending upon the enemy you are able to manufacture to keep it operating .
Thus if you place the reactor below the city – inability to get at with even Naval Weapons – you could practically hold out until the food runs out – or you get someone to infiltrate the system and cut it off from the inside.

Maybe a new book needs to printed that includes all the tech out there from all the sources and their availability date / rules re use in battle.

They are roughly the same thing, the grid is the bases for the mech borne item. It is a start towards something that could if more is done with it become a screen or shield, so to speak, and with some adjustments for things could be something folks want or not.

I have had folks bring all kinds of home tech ideas to the game, and some are fun others are like yeah nope and then one or two are like wow this should be in the game normally. All depends on what you want out of the game.

The clans way of combat limited collateral damage such as civilians.
And most military strikes in the IS hit cities, as most units tended to hide in them when they could, so the detonation fields would not really keep cities and civvies safe.

I could see them limiting it to small areas. But even that would have changed the war.
A simple bombing run on an Mobile HQ being saved by this tech would mean planets never fell from loss of the HQ.
Even protecting repair bays would be a thing.

With the required power needed, I would think ships and stations would not be able to use it. Even needing supports to hole the 'netting' of the unit in place would be a possible loop hole in it.
One more idea of a loop hole is how large the holes are in the webbing or netting? Bombs that detonate from impact might survive the detonation side of it, so the old bombs of the terrain world wars might have been the answer... Or maybe this is why the current missiles used are stupid for tracking. The field may have been enough to destroy the high tech tracking.
