First consider the many aspects of a military unit – as an example the English Military…

Commander Usually a General (or Brigadier), who commands the formation.
Chief of Staff The officer who runs the headquarters on a day-to-day basis and who often acts as a second-in-command. Generally know as the COS.
G1 Branch Responsible for personnel matters including manning, discipline and personnel services.
G2 Branch Responsible for intelligence and security.
G3 Branch Responsible for operations, including staff duties, exercise planning, training, operational requirements, combat development & tactical doctrine.
G4 Branch Logistics and quartering.
G5 Branch Planning
G6 Branch Communications and IT
G7 Branch Training
G8 Branch Resource Management (Finance and Contracts)
G9 Branch CIMIC (Civil affairs and co-operation with other agencies)

Second, Consider the Clans …

The Clans utilize a blitzkrieg tactic – designed to create disorganization through the use of highly mobile forces and advanced firepower;

In the event Inner Sphere forces violate clan battle rules they would automatically shift in their tactics from single combat to an open combat tactic;

Thus the use of Inner Sphere forces in utilizing concentrated firepower must be considered only from the point of view of its repercussions by opponent Clan forces;

Third, Consider what is available to the IS that will provide them with an advantage…

Alternate Tactics to be considered:- (if they are invading choose your terrain to maximize IS advantages)
• Fighting from an elaborate network of caves, dugouts, tunnels, and underground installations that are difficult to find and destroy / fortified bunkers that even an elemental would have problems accessing;
• Fighting from elaborate terrain that neutralize Clan’s range advantage;
• Utilizing mines and hidden explosives – The size and intensity of a WWI anti-trench mine – not those small ones that are discussed in most of the books;

Think of the Gustav Line WWII Italy - a perfect defence set up ....

The use of commandoes to pull off daring raids to …
• Overwhelm Clan support units either during operations or upon recently captured worlds;
• Destruction of facilities / assets – utilizing unexpected entry and exit methods (speed and explosives);
• Undercover missions behind enemy lines – ammunition dumps / communication and technology / Psy-Ops - operations that lead to confusion and panic / Kidnapping / Consumables Poisoning (food and Water);
• Introduction of “Black-Box” communication equipment to Clan Held worlds;
• Missions to remind Inner Sphere Citizens who now find themselves upon Clan held worlds they have not been forgotten about and to provide intelligence as to the greater war’s current situation;
• Training Insurgent units upon Clan held worlds – guerilla warfare / terrorist warfare;

The use of Intelligence assets at home and abroad …
• Gain as much information as possible on the Clans;
• Breaking Cyphers;
• Anti-Clan Spies unit to hunt down Clan Spys;

Technology breakthroughs that lead to the use of…
• Anti-Elemental Sniper Rifle (Kills Elementals at a long range);
• Arrow IV – Chaff rounds (Disables Clan Sensory Equipment);
• ‘Mech Hand to Hand Weapons (Axe / Sword / Claws / Shield)
• Anti Ship Capital Missile (Target – Warship and Jump-ship engines);
• Anti Mech Air-to-ground missile (Target – Clan Mechs / Dropships)

The introduction of such weapons would lead to new units being formed to capitalize upon the introduction of new weapon systems:-
• The sniper unit – recon. Unit to hunt and kill elementals at extreme range;
• Arrow IV – Chaff – Pre / During / Post combat to disrupt the Clans battlefield sensory data –and to be used in conjunction with other strategies;
• Increase the number of hand to hand ‘Mech fighting units against Clan regular units including those of the Shield ‘Mech (designed to soak up damage whilst protecting its partner);
• Anti-Ship Missile – Big Wing Formations of aerospace fighters to penetrate Clan Aerospace Fighters and neutralize their Warships or Jump-ships engines;
• Anti-Mech Missile – Large Formations of support aerospace fighters to be used for support / damage their ability to transport their forces off world.

With that you must consider how many areas can the Clans Claim to have air- dominance – will they be able to say they own the sky?

Alternatives to this Anti-Mech Missile must also be considered with regards to large VTOL attack craft utilizing the hit and run;

Integrate more conventional Strike Fighter / Bombers into the units;

The use of Psy-Ops that lead to the use of ….
• Propaganda;
• Causing Clan non warriors to defect;
• Causing suspicion among Clans and those within the Clans (True-born and Free-born);
• Ultimate Aim – Complete breakdown of the Clans Society (open warfare if possible);

Utilizing Elastic Defence (also known as Defence in Depth)
Such as the German Doctrine for creating three defensive zones, the outpost zone, the battle zone and the rearward zone.
Outpost zone – minimal troops required to maintain observation and combat enemy reconnaissance;
Battle Zone – used to wear the enemy down over time;
Rearward Zone – holding the majority heavy of artillery and to aid in defeating the enemy contained in the Battle Zone.
When the enemy was worn down IS forces are to use their reserves that have been saved from a concentrated defensive line and launch prompt counterattacks that the defensive line would “bounce” back.
This is done by giving up land to the enemy in exchange for retaining a defensive line – nt: an elastic defence can have multiple lines of less fortified defences each protecting the other, weakening the enemy over time rather than plainly holding back any attempt at advance.
It is designed to minimize casualties to one’s own side while maximizing casualties to the other side’s troops.

Utilizing Armour / Hover / Wheeled / VTOL craft to destabilize the Clans – to be used in conjunction with other strategies and in conjunction with all other units on the battlefield (‘Mech, Infantry and aerospace);

If Capellan Confederation troops …
• Are they loyal to Kali Liao – consider using a gas attack that will not show up on the bio-filters;

Consider proposing a war of manoeuvre, slashing the enemy as IS forces withdraw and fight delaying actions when the Clans attacked. Land gains are to become less important than damaging the Clans and keeping them off balance;

Thus a running battle in which the hit / slash-and-fade / run tactics is consistently used against their Clan opponents;

Fourth, on the Larger Intergalactic Scale War…

The use of flanking – upon those worlds close to the periphery – Embargo the Clans to their resupply craft. Will also require the clans to halt their advance into the IS – and transport forces to their rear. Look for areas in which there might be a concentrated weakness and attack;

Consider offensive actions designed to disrupt / destroy the Clans logistical support. Nt: Clan non-combatant prisoners of war are required;

Consider offences to free Inner Sphere Prisoners of War held in Clan re-education Camps;
Get thee to Coventry … Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious by this daughter of Tharkad … Our army shall march through. Well to New Avalon tonight.
