--- --Variant Notes:

--- --- Produced by the Republic of the Sphere from 3087 and onwards, the BT-1As variant is a fire-support focused variant of the original BT-1A Breathtaker BattleMech. While plans were already being drawn up for the the -1As model in 3085, it wouldn't be until production of both the freshly minted -1Ab and the newly re-instated -1A models had ramped up that the first -1As models would walk off the line in 3087. Amidst the Republic's consolidation of power and the creation of the Republic Armed Forces, a need to standardize various elements within the Republic's military lead to commencement of the -1As; it being built of the same chassis as the -1A and -1Ab. These machines would go on to serve Republic forces with flying colors well into the future.

--- --- Despite being a fire-support variant of the BT-1A, the design is actually surpringsly close to the 'Mech it was derived from. The pulse lasers have been swapped with Extended-Range versions, while the ER PPC and Extended-Range Small Lasers have been replaced by a standard PPC and a single Small Pulse Laser mounted beside it. The most drastic change the -1As makes is actually in replacing the Six-Tubed Short-Range Missile Launcher with a Fifteen-Tubed Long-Range Missile Launcher while retaining the former's two ton allotment of ammunition. This particular change gives it a much more fearsome long-distance punch, while drastically improving the BattleMech's capabilities to perform in-direct fire and carry out long-range bombardments. The shift from pulse lasers to ER versions means that the -1As Breathtaker can use it's secondary battery to keep opponents at medium range, while the Small Pulse Laser provides the PPC some cover inside of it's minimum range as well as helping to deter infantry.

--- --- Overall, the -1As proved unremarkable yet nonetheless effective and a popular choice for pilots who preferred to have a little more distance between them and their targets. The -1As proved itself a competent medium range combatant and an excellent fire-support platform for Assault and Heavy Lances alike, thanks to it's speed. Unfortunately, although the -1As was designed off of the same chassis as both the original BT-1A and it's -1Ab off shoot; the replacement of the right arm missile launcher required an extensive re-design of that arm as well as a re-tooling to produce it. This meant that the right arm of a -1As became very popular salvage for enterprising units or Mercenaries looking to 'renovate' their low-tech -1Ab models to the -1As specification. As a result, right arms for the -1As were at something of a premium until the Republic made the decision to release a version of the -1Ab that simply changed out the arm and reconfigured some components to accommodate the bigger launcher... and stop people from blowing the friggin' arms off of their BattleMechs. This design would come to be known as the -1Bs and would be offered as a refit kit for existing -1Ab models.

--- --- NOTE: The BT-1Bs removes the SRM6 and it's ammo, along with two Single Heat Sinks to mount an LRM 15 and two tons of ammo. The ammo is stored in the Right Arm and Right Torso respectively. The Right Arm Medium Laser is moved into the Left Torso and occupies the space of the Single Heat Sink which was removed from that location. Finally the Large Laser is replaced with an additional pair of Medium Lasers. The design loses two points worth of heat dissipation and runs one point cooler over all. This variant is in the attachments.

--- --Designer's Notes:

--- --- Designed in the Lyran Commonwealth shortly after the outbreak of the FedComm Civil War and put into production only a short time before the beginning of the Jihad, the Breathtaker was to be the Commonwealth's answer to fast Davion Assault 'Mechs like the Victor and the Templar. In typical Lyran fashion, the Breathtaker mounts a lethal array of weapons. A Ten-Tubed Long-Range Missile Launcher pads out the Breathtaker's main long range armament, which consists of a single ER PPC. Two tons of ammo keep the launcher well stocked through extended engagements while a single Large Pulse Laser provides accurate supplemental firepower at medium range to compliment the rather spartan long range weaponry. However, the true power of the Breathtaker comes from it's blistering short-range arsenal. A pair of Medium Pulse Lasers mounted in the the BattleMech's Right Torso are augmented by a Six-Tubed Short-Range Missile Launcher. The ever-accurate Large Pulse Laser in the Left Torso and an additional two tons of ammo allocated to the short range launcher make the Breathtaker a mean close range brawler. Rounding out the entourage is a pair of Extended-Range Small Lasers to make up for the lack of hand actuators should the brawl devolve into an all-out melee.

--- --- Utilizing the Center Torso of a salvaged Dragon in the design process, Lyran engineers developed the chassis around it's 320 Light Fusion Engine. Drawing heavily from the Zeus, Lyran engineers also incorporated design features from Victors salvaged throughout the war. Ultimately, this led to a BattleMech with a torso resembling a cross between a flat-chested Dragon and a short-shouldered Victor with arms and legs not unlike a much smaller Zeus. The cockpit and head areas were the most engineered out of everything on the Breathtaker... and it shows. A far recessed design that is set down into the torso with a nonetheless impressive (and deceiving) field of view for the pilot, the Breathtaker was in fact named not for the death it would deal nor the fear it would inspire, but rather the view it afforded the pilot of the battlefield around them. The advertising slogan would read, "Nothing beats seeing the quiet after the battle from the seat of a Breathtaker."

--- --- Built upon an Endo-Steel Chassis and mounting Fifteen and a Half tons of Standard-Grade BattleMech Armor, the Breathtaker would become much beloved by pilots during it's short life. Although it could run hot on rare occasion, the 'Mechs' Fifteen Double Heat Stinks generally kept it's lucky MechWarrior quite cool. Unfortunately during the Jihad, production of this 'Mech would dwindle, ensuring it's rarity throughout the Inner Sphere. Spare parts would fetch a high price, and what few new models were built during the limited production runs were covetously snapped up by anyone fortunate enough to be on the rather exclusive waiting list. Altogether the Breathtaker would become a breathtaking experience for anyone lucky enough to pilot one, and an equally breathtaking sight for anyone unfortunate enough to find themselves on the business end of one.
