The Periphery State - Magistracy of Canopus – what are the characteristics that define this state?
A periphery state that is distrustful of the Inner Sphere;
A realm based upon social freedoms - allowing people to engage in activities considered immoral or illegal in other realms. So long as all involved were consenting adults (with workaround rules); and
Including gambling, prostitution, recreation drugs and hunting (animals on four legs or even "two").
Star League Era - Onwards
It took the Reunification War lasting twenty years to force compliance upon them. They never lost their desire for their anything goes free society – then there was the New Vandenberg Uprising.
From then on they were able to retain their society based upon their rules.
However,
3075 – Jihad –
Naomi Centrella-Liao liberated the world of Canopus
When she left Canopus for Sian in Mid December she left the CAPELLAN Red Lancers to “bolster the remaining planetary defences”. Isn’t it more accurate to say she used the Red Lancers to ensure her right to rule, despite what the people of Canopus would desire.
Thus she became Dictator in all but name as well as her daughter Ilsa.
Then we come to the Magestrix Ilsa Centrella – who’s unique “relationship” with her sibling Daoshen Liao produced her as yet publicly known daughter, Danai Liao-Centrella. In addition when you look at her picture on the Sarna wiki she looks more like a Liao Dowager than the ruler of the freedom loving Canopian people.
Questions …..
Have the Canopian people succumbed to House Liao Society over their brief rulership by a Liao-Centrella?
Ans: For me I cannot see this happening they have retained their freedom loving culture from before the Star League – So why change now?
If Ilsa continues to force her “Liao” culture upon the freedom loving people of the Magistracy of Canopus. Would this start a new uprising to once again gain their freedom?
By 3145 hasn’t enough time gone by for the people of Canopus to hate their “Liao” loving Magestrix – isn't it time to state a Coup and remove her once and for all and at the same time regain their independence?
Ans: The two societies Liao and Centrella are just too divergent to tolerate each other long-term there must be a war to remove the Liao taint and restore Canopus to its freedom loving ways.
Scenario:
Given the trouble House Davion is having with House Liao in the Canon History can we postulate that in the post 3150 era House Davion will assist the Magistracy of Canopus, and its new Magestrix, in its war for its freedom from House Liao?
Could we see a House Centrella / House Davion alliance of convenience?

These two societies are completely incompatible to being merged into one or, for that matter, allowing a person who’s dominant traits come from one society being allowed, long term, rulership over the other society, it just cannot work – an individual who professes to be a Liao Dowager cannot rule!
That is, a Liao Dowager – who adheres to the principles of order within a stratified and tradition dominated society, can in no way maintain rulership over the freedom loving Canopian people – it would be like attempting to say “the man who is in a suit and tie” is in control of hippie commune, or from a historical perspective is it not closer to say this is an example of the American war of Independence? A monarch attempting to impose their will over subjects who’s desire for freedom led them to their only recourse – a declaration of independence and a war for independence to determine their own fate!
Over time the appearance and mannerisms of an alien / foreign ruler, despite them having the correct last name, within the Canopian Capital would force the Canopus people to act.
A revolution is required, when a foreign ruler attempts to impose their way of life upon an indigenous people, a fundamental transformation of society, will they not fight back to retain their own way of life – again like the American Indian wars as an example.
What are the game developers thinking here – there must be a War of independence! – otherwise they have completely destroyed this once unique periphery realm for all time – they should not go into the night with a whimper, are they not masters of their fate, swords drawn ready to rebuild and restore in all essentials to its old form, convenience and dignity! Are they not a Periphery realm who fought for twenty years against the impossible might of the SLDF!
This is a complete travesty …..
May I suggest Ilsa Centrella is assassinated during a Coup – one of her Centrella relatives finally has had enough and with the backing of the military they strike to regain their culture / their way of life / and most importantly of all their dignity, as the simpering Liao’s culture is just too foreign and too servile for the freedom loving Canopians.
Cray, I therefore ask you to put forth this declaration of war between those who are loyal to the true House of Centrella and that of the servile House Liao to that of the game developers.
I hereby also ask all others who agree with me to stand up and declare (by making your will known below) ….

My Protagonist -
Biography
Kossandra Centrella (B: March 15th, 3118) is the granddaughter of Erde Centrella.
Early Life
The only granddaughter of Erde Centrella, Kossandra was raised within the city of Reynard, upon the world of Royal Foxx under an assumed name to protect her from political court assassins. Her peaceful youth however evaporated shortly after her tenth birthday her family was assassinated under orders of the then Magestrix Ilsa Centrella.
Fleeing for her life with her nanny she was able to escape into the Federated Suns where she assumed a new identity to hide her once more before she was placed into hiding with the mercenary unit Vandelay’s Valkryries as Dorine Echols’ orphaned niece Tanya Echols.
Early years
Shortly after arriving with Vandelay’s Valkryries Tanya joined the unit as a MchWarrior apprentice where she was groomed to take her aunt’s position someday.
A natural tactician and leader, Tanya Echols was accepted into the Nagelring where she graduated in 3139, from there she served one tour with the 6th Lyran Guards before returning to Vandelay’s Valkryries.
In 3145 as the executive officer of the Second Battalion Vandelay’s Valkryries where employed by the Free Worlds League, and deployed to the world of Kwamashu.
Appearance / Psychology
Despite her petite stature, her vivid shade of blond hair that is slightly curlier on the tip, cold blue eyes with a tint of what appears to be almost purple and a distinctive accent, she broke several hearts at the Nagelring where it became obvious that she is very adept at manipulating people.
Her talents for strategies, efficiency, and a ruthless cold and calculating personality whilst in combat make her a useful officer and a threat on the battlefield.

The Free Worlds League and the Capellan Confederation fought no less than three wars over Andurien
As Duke, Ari continued on with the same policy as his mother, Evelyn Humphreys, which was to slowly expand the power of the Duchy by staying independent from the nations that surround it. Being able to stay out of any major entanglements since the dissolution of the Free Worlds League.
On the 25th of April 3075 Naomi Centrella-Liao visited Andurien as an envoy of both the Magistracy of Canopus and the Capellan Confederation. The tense visit involved both reminders of the shared history between Canopus, Andurien and House Liao, but also some pointed warnings against the Duchy of Andurien pursuing "ambitions of the past." The visit was ultimately successful, with Naomi leaving Andurien on the 1st of May with a signed non-aggression pact covering all three states.
In a move that surprised almost everyone, Ilsa married Duke Ari Humphreys of the Duchy of Andurien on the 1st of March 3137 which cemented an alliance between the Duchy of Andurien and the Magistracy of Canopus with a partnership with the Capellan Confederation.
The issues
Sophia Humphries wants to remove Duke Ari as she now sees him as a traitor to Andurien – historically the CC have been the enemy of the Andurien and his marriage with Isa demands that he must be removed thus ending the partnership between Andurien and the CC.
The Free Canopus movement within the Magistracy, they see the current Magistrix as a lapdog of the CC – who is forcing the Magistracy society to become the same as the CC – this is unacceptable to them the society and the freedoms their forbearers fought the SLDF for must be preserved. A new Magistrix must be found so that this travesty is removed.
(Changing from a female run society to being seen as second class citizens within their own home (CC is run by men who do not have a positive view of women in power – unless they are Chancellor of the CC)

Preamble
The war between the CC and the FS continues. At a disadvantage the FS intelligence organisation founded special teams consisting of MoC – exiled MoC who had their realm occupied by CC – simply known as the Resistance;
Whilst Tanya and the Second Battalion Vandelay’s Valkryries where deployed on the world of Kwamashu she performs a heroic act saving Andalusian civilians.
Due to this act she is to be awarded a medal to celebrate her gallantry upon Andurien;
Once there she will be introduced to Sophia
Chapter 1
Breaking in to the public air waves The Resistance broadcasts a message to the MoC people from their leader, the missing princess, “Kossandra Centrella” announces her intention to liberate the MoC from the CC and its lapdogs. Multiple acts of terrorism occur throughout the MoC following the end of the message.
At the same time as The Resistance’s message being broadcasted to the MoC people - Andurien’s Capitol are invaded by Magistracy rebels (assassination attempt upon Duke Ari Humphries) and are dealt with by Tanya’s unit and Sophia’s security force. Unknown to all Sophia’s security force is able to restrain two of the resistance members and have them secreted away for interrogation.
One week later –
Duke Ari Humphries’ intelligence officer informs him of Sophia’s action in taking two of the Resistance members during the assassination attempt. He informs Ari that she is using this as way of securing her candidacy for becoming the next Duchess.
Elsewhere Danai Liao-Centrella is travelling by Jump-ship to the MoC.

Chapter 2
Increasing acts of terrorism / sabotage throughout the MoC as a revolution stirs at the resistance rises up to begin their march toward freedom – directed towards any corrupt CC individuals / companies etc whilst at the same time they engage in acts to protect MoC citizens.
Police and military units begin cracking down upon dissenters.
Sophia discusses a hypothetical future with Tanya – to help her overthrow Ari she will need not only the assistance that she will gain through the secret negotiations with Jessica Marik to return Andurien back to the FWL, and with her as Duchess upon the success of the mission, she will also need a military commander to assist her.
Her Plan is to use the Resistance as her cat’s paw to achieve this end.
Tanya agrees to assist her – though in reality Tanya has her own plans of bring in the FWL and Andurien in a war against the CC – enabling her time to fee the MoC.
Chapter 3
The battle for freedom rages on, Sophia has dispatched her mercenary ally Tanya to pursue the renegade freedom fighters from Andurian Space.
Fate steps in, Tanya’s jumpship mis-jumps to an unknown region of space – a pirate point above a planet with issuing a repeating distress signal – upon investigation Tanya’s unit finds an un-yet-discovered WoB facility – in it they find may of their Omni-Mechs and omni-fighters. Apparently the garrison force’s supplies were contaminated and without medical facilities the majority of the unit perished. Those that survived headed out into the forest to find a new food source – they never returned, leaving the base empty of any personnel.
Claiming the WOB technology as her own Tanya decided to create a new that she could use to strike at her enemies under the guise of an infamous pirate name “ – Trevaline : Lady Death and Death’s Consorts.
On Andurien Sophia is finding that political manoeuvring with the shifting balance of power for the Andurien Throne difficult – new allegiances are required in the hopes of gaining an edge ….
As the flames of war are fanned in the MoC, the more sharply the knife of tyranny shine … Dania’s presence is unable to stop the desire for freedom, as she engages the resistance in many small scale battles throughout the MoC.
Chapter 4
During a battle by Danai’s forces against a regular MoC forces that have done rogue – her forces are supported by a WoB-Mech unit calling themselves Deaths Consorts and lead by a Trevaline descendent by appearing (like magic) upon their rear, and stating they were hired by Ilsa Centrella. As the MoC forces flee Deaths Consorts also disappear.
Over the next month numerous Death’s Consorts attacks against MoC resistance and military targets occur as Danai and her unit attempt to actively pursue the unit – suspiciously arriving after an attack to restore “CC” rule - causing the flames of rebellion to intensify.
Chapter 5
War on a grand scale has erupted throughout the MoC!
The people’s resistance hope for victory begins to grow and flourish as once neutral regular army MoC units, people and corporations begin to fall in line behind the revolution, shifting the balance of power within the MoC.
Through the haze of the conflict evidence is supplied to Sophia from Tanya that it was not Ilsa Centrella who hired Deaths Consorts - Daoshen Liao, Coordinator of the CC, had Duke Ari Huphries’ contract the pirates for his wife.
Sophia’s forces launch a Coup to remove Ari (backed by the FWL).
Chapter 6
Outraged by the FWL assisting Sophia CC forces attack the FWL – one such CC unit, however due to a mistaken encrypted message three CC units mistakenly attacked the Clan Protectorate initiating a full scale invasion of the CC by Clan Nova Cat and Clan Sea Fox.
Whilst Sopia’s coup is progressing on Andurian Death’s Consorts strike at FS supply depo – outraged The FS launch a massive counter offensive into the CC.
Chapter 7
The burgeoning war within the MoC grinds to sickening stalemate as Dani proves the more skilful in military tactics, when ‘her’ Deaths Consorts pirates capture “Kossandra Centrella” (she who is pretending to be Kossandra)
(note: Tanya muses over the point - is she saving this fake just so she can execute her yourself?)
Elsewhere within the CC – Sian - back room political plotting (mutterings) begins the CC is now engaged on five fronts – logistics are beginning to strain their ability to prosecute all of these wars at the same time – Daoshen’s right to rule begins to be questioned within certain circles.
Chapter 8
The Leader of the people’s army is free - “Kossandra Centrella” – aided by Vandelay’s Valkryries 2nd Battalion strike at Ilsa Centrella’s residence.
Tanya kills Ilsa Centrella.
On Andurien Sophia becomed Duchess of Andurien following Ari’s death during the Coup - In recognition of the FWL’s support she signs the document returning Andurien to the FWL.
Fate steps in once again when Daoshen Liao is found dead, apparently by a massive heart attack.
Factions within the CC immediately vie for the Coordinators throne.
Danai’s reality of the incessant war within the MoC comes into sharp focus …. Each side seeking peace, but with opposing ideals as to what exactly peace means. However, Danai realises that I order to preserve the gains of the CC in recent years she leaves behind the MoC – taking with her all the CC forces at her disposal as civil war is looming within the CC as well as continued wars with the FWL, The Protectorate Clans and the FS …. That is unless she can take the throne quickly and dispatch diplomats quickly to bring these wars to a halt as quickly as she can.
The people’s army and the MoC regular forces solidify their power …. The ‘Fake’ Kossandra Centrella becomes the next Magestrix …. Tanya returns to the Valkyries ….. together with her new alter ego as a pirate ….

In the aftermath of the liberation of the MoC …..
A Magestrix who could be an agent of the FS;
Due to their being no clear lines of succession within the CC t this time – a civil war could erupt at any time – Danai will have to act decisively if she is to be the next Coordinator – otherwise whomever takes the thrown will view her as a potential threat and attempt to have her assassinated (where could she seek refuge?);
The FS could / should have regained worlds from the CC – and a new ally – though this must be covert as the MoC has just thrown off one dictator, so in no way will it tolerate a new one;
The Clans’ Protectorate has increased the size of their realm at the expense of the CC – how many worlds could they have taken and which ones?;
Andurien has once more become a part of the FWL;
And Tanya and her pirate ego are let loose upon an unsuspecting universe;
Thus setting the universe up for? ……..
I know I need to broaden the story out, give it a time frame include specifics etc, but are there really no comments as to this alternate future story arc? How could I improve it?

In the Alt setting, there is no CC.
So leaving the Red Lancers could not happen, nor would the Magestrix have been involved with Liao, unless the MoC was hiding him.
Second. It is claimed the Jihad did NOT happen. So large plot hole here.
Third. If the MoC distrusted the IS, then the little union with the DoA would play both FC and FWL against each other to stay free. The idea of them joining the FC does the same thing as the CC influence. It goes completely against their ways, and would start the very issue you have with Liao.
Fourth. The would try to get DC, TC, RotS to help keep pressure on the FC/FWL to prevent them from getting into any sort of adventurism. There are other smaller realms near them, that could be manipulated into the same thing.
So unless there is a big change in the alt, this thread is pointless.

However if you want a comparison to my Alt Univers.
Comparable time line approx. 3150 ….
1. CC does not exist;
2. St. Ives Exists;
3. MoC and A exist as one defense realm – two leaders;
4. FC still exists – Davion / Steiner ruler-ship from Katherine’s side of the family;
5. FWL remains – Marik rulership (Thomas died in the explosion – so rulership comes from his Brother’s daughter);
6. WoB is a possibility within the FWL – however they are within the SLDF – Jihad never occurred;
7. Clans have been ejected from the IS with the exception of the Cats, Bears, Wolf and perhaps the Diamond Shark;
8. War between the belligerent Clans and the SLDF is ongoing - within the deep periphery;
9. Omika / Victor have established a new realm in the deep periphery.
Note by <unspecified date in my alt universe> both A and St. Ives are both larger realms in size than that of which they originally were. (over time they have been able to expand - through a combination of military and political brinkmanship)
So, here is the re-write above for my alt universe …. In a rough and rushed draft form ….
In an internal power grab Kossandra Centrella’s family is assassinated by a rival family claimant to the throne – only she survives, where her chief maid is able to get her out of the MoC and into exile with the Valkyries as Tanya …..
Schooling on Tharkad as above ….
Valkyries hired by Sophia upon A as a security force – there Tanya meets Sophia
A comes under attack by the “Free CC” movement – The Valkyries are dispatched by Sophia, to hunt down this renegade unit within A space.
(In the hopes this will place her above the others contending for A’s throne, ie she hopes this may ensure her becoming the next Duchess of A)
Miss-jump above an uncharted and uninhabited world – there Tanya discovers a BattleMech research facility that has been abandoned for quite some time – in it they find of unknown manufacture prototype Omni-Mechs, aerospace fighters and power armour infantry. (The true owners will only become known in the future when they want their machines back)
After many misadventures Tanya uncovers evidence that the current Magestrix of the MoC and the Duke of Andurien are in secret discussions with the FC and the St.I heir apparent is also involved – Their plan is to set up the current St.I ruler as a threat to the FC (by making it appear as if she is attempting to re-establish the CC – and at the same time she is personally financially supporting a known terrorist group – the Free CC movement.) When this plot is exposed the current ruler will be deposed and St.I will be absorbed into the FC with the St.I heir becoming a FC Duke.
A and MoC’s reward – FC will assist them militarily in a future war against the FWL – ie. assisting them in expanding their realms at the expense of the FWL.
However, what the current St.I ruler believes is that the MoC and A’s plan is to assist St.I in becoming the third state within the A / MoC alliance.
Thus freeing them from increasing FC oversight and control.
This will also be achieved whilst at the same time nominating St.I for a position on the Star League Council – thus putting St.I beyond the reach of the FC for now.
The free CC movement however believes St.I are attempting to re-establish the CC – they have been completely duped.
Tanya uses her new pirate persona in pre-emptive strikes - blaming the current Duke of A and the Magestrix of MoC for strikes against the FWL / FC
Tanya sends Sophia “proof” that the Duke of A is complicit in the secret FC plan. She uses this information to topple his rule – Sophia becomes the new Duchess of A.
Whilst at the same time there is a coup upon St.Ives – heir apparent takes control
The Free CC movement strikes at the heirs forces – battle ensures – they are betrayed by a St.I spy working with the FC and are subsequently killed off.
Whilst this battle rages on Tanya used her pirate persona to rescue the true leader of St.I. (as the majority of her security has been transferred to fight Free CC) She then divides her forces- Valkyries half with St.I ruler in a mad dash to Terra and the Star League conference. The other half – the pirate unit – sail towards MoC space. (Note this will be an act on Tanya’s part for the St.I ruler - making it look like the two units are separate – when they are not – also the St.I ruler now owes the Valkyries a debt of gratitude in the future)
The FC launch pre-emptive strikes against A and St.I to remind them of their place.
In a twist that no one sees coming FWL military assists both St.I and A in linking their realms – Tanya, when she sent information to Sophia he also send a second set to the Minister of Intelligence within the FWL.
St.I’s true ruler makes it to Terra and the Star League Council – there she becomes the new inductee as a member – with the assistance of Sophia and the FWL – FWL recognises St.I as an independent state who has now joined with A and MoC becoming a new tri-partied state.
In reprisal the FC launch a raid against the MoC Capital - During the maelstrom Tanya uses her pirate persona and strikes at the MoC Magestrix – killing the woman who ordered the death of her family.
Tanya returns to the Valkyries on A (keeping her pirate persona hidden)

Projected future of canon?
I was under the impression the developers had already done the 'future' (3100 and beyond), and it was nothing like this.
Then to add in the 'alt' to support all that is written sounds more like the same thing as before, only a little more round about to get there.
I have not heard anything about the dark ages having a separate St. Ives, nor the Moc/DoA being one connected state.

I understand…. The silence is the thunderous …… however, the idea of a unit that can be morphed into a second more deceptive unit to fulfill its commanders more darker whims should be considered and included.
In the event a states’ intelligence organisations find out about her dual nature I could see them hiring both personalities – for the legal garrison and the not so legal black operation that will allow the state a degree of plausible deniability – it would also allow Tanya the freedom to conduct her own pirate activities with a degree of freedom from the state (as long as the state does not become her target).
