How many mech factories did ComStar have?

I know of at least 3 on Terra, but have gotten the impression they had more on and off Terra.

Does anyone have an idea on how many factories they had making mechs and other war material?

I can't put firm numbers on it, but I suspect quite a few more than 3. Skobel had several factories, like one for each mech model.

Only vaguely, though I've been curious. I suspect without Terra, they're dependent on House weapon suppliers. They don't really "own" any planets outside of the Solar System. (That I know of.)

I'll have to take a look at my old Comstar Sourcebook and Star League Sourcebook, then I can give you a hard number. I do know that they had black water navy shipyards on several moons of Jupiter or Saturn and they had the War College on Mars. Give me a little time and I'll see what I can dig up.

Terra had the most factories in the Star League to memory. Now since Comstar originally didn't need war material those there were not toasted (some were rebuilt when Special K was there) were mothballed. It wasn't until Waterly I believe that they began to rebuild their factories with the equipment mothballed under Blake. I do believe though since they had immense numbers of mothballed mechs the first factories they did build were parts and weapons and high-tech engines (if you read through the Tuk. Sourcebook you will read the explanations of upgrades to the King Crab and Black Knight that said something about a glut of 300xl engines from a cache but to maintain number they would in my opinion need to get a factory specialising in xl shielding up and running).

I would say by the time Wobbies 'invaded' they would have about a dozen sites operational.

My memory was that (and I have neither the SLSB or CSSB) Comstar was busy building up during the 30th century, and only at the tail end of that, when it would have been hard to keep said buildup secret, did they taper things off (i.e. stop producing Dantes).

Ok everyone, please note that this list is far from extensive, it is what I could find by skimming through the Comstar and Star League Sourcebooks. I am sure there are other locations for this information, but this is what I was able to find.

From pg 131-132 of the Star League Sourcebook:
"The Terran Hegemony had more than 300 manufacturers of major systems and over a hundred subsidiaries that made parts etc. Prior to 2455 (when Lyran commandoes stole the blueprints for the battlemech) factories had perimeter fencing to keep out spies. Post 2455 most factories were built to withstand outright attack. Being built inside mountains, underground and even under the seas." Not a direct qoute, but very close.
Here is a list of the various companies that had factories on Terra or in the Sol system:
Earthwerks
Ford Millitary Limited
General Mechanics-Mars
Ostmann Industries
Boeing Interstellar
Wanker Aerospace-Mars
Blue Nose Clipperships-Mars
Di-Tron Heavy Industries
Krester's Ship Construction
Aldis Industries
Leapard Armor of Terra
The following are from pg. 162-165
Ceres Metals
Mitchell Vehicles Interstellar-Mars/Venus
Qou Medical Technologies
Holden Planetary Engineers-Mars
Nirashanic (not sure of my spelling)Computer Collective
New Earth Trading Company

Some of these were headquartered on Terra and had factories elsewhere, some the other way around. The sourcebook does say that this is only a partial list, since many records and factories were destroyed during the occupation by and rescue from Amaris' forces. Thus giving the authors of fluff text the ability to create more factories.

From the Comstar Sourcebook pg. 14
"Following Operation Silver Shield, Comstar stripped New Earth, the headquarters of the SLDF, of every piece of equipment and millitary hardware, and transported it back to Terra, where it was meticulously mothballed and hidden for future use."
Based on this information, I would assume that they did that on many former Hegemony worlds that were not grabbed by the succesor states during the opening rounds of the 1st succesion war. Once again giving the various authors the abiltiy to create what they need, and not violate any prior cannon text. I hope this information enlightens everyone, enjoy!

Suddenly, I have no problem seeing a Terra that overthrows Comstar in the early 2800s staying independent from the rest of the Inner Sphere.

I feel that I could have looked through more books. I thought that it was a complete list considering what books I have, but I don't have every single sourcebook out there. I wish I had more time to look through what I have, but my fulltime job doesn't afford me the spare time.... Oh well, I hope the information is found to be usefull!

It is useful, it gives me enough info to flesh out the Terran idea I had and have some solid foundations to go on. Again thank you for the info. I was kind of stuck with the big three that we have heard a lot about (Skobel etc...) and they can only make some many mechs and vehicles etc...so this helps out a lot.
