Being new to these forums, but a regular returnee to this site, I'd like to contribute to your intelligent discussions and start by asking: What is your favorite BattleTech unit, and why? Do you like mechs, armor, aerospace fighters, VTOL's, warships or even the lowly peasent troopers? Clan or Inner Sphere designs? Other?

Personally I have always held a soft spot for the Summoner (Thor). It's a great chassis for mounting crazy variants on, and I just like that look! But really I seem to be more partial to Inner Sphere designs, Fafnir, Templar, Cataphract, Warhammer (Unseen), Maruader (Unseen), Bushwacker, Panther and Raijin just to name a few! I'm pretty well rounded and believe in the RCT style armor/aero/mech forces working together.

Hmm, my favorite is, of course, the mech. To be more specific, the BJ-1. I don't know why, but I love that mech. If I have one in a lance, I typically come out ahead. The ONI-1K is nice too.

Hmmm, I was never a big fan of Aerotech, so though I understand the need for air/space superiority, I never really got into them. I prefer mechs and armor. Some favorites would be the 3025 Grasshopper, the 3 and 4 PPC armed Awesome, the 3025 Enforcer, the Enforcer 3, T-bolt E, and the RAC armed Jagermech. Among tanks favs would be the J. Edgar Hoover, Pegasus, Schrek, and Patton/Rommel.

A short, semi-off topic prelude, does anyone else find it odd that aerospace fighters use the same weapons as mechs?

Back on topic, as for my favorite unit type, I would have to go with the only one not appearing in today's militaries (besides elementals, which qualify as super-infantry), the mech. As for class of mech, I'd have to say mediums. Good mix of speed, manuverability and firepower exemplified in one of my favorite designs, the Shadowcat, and in one of my favorite units (as in clusters, being what I originally thought this thread was about), the 522nd Adder Sentinels. How can you not love a cluster that fights in an asteroid field (and is good at it)?

Aerospace fighters with ground weapons.....odd, yes.....suprising, no. A laser is a laser no matter what it's mounted on. Although I see your point, todays fighter craft don't carry 150mm cannons, missile racks with tons of reloads, gauss rifles or PPC's. Nothing that ground pounders would carry at least. No they carry conventional or guided bombs, sidewinders, 20mm cannons etc. In the 31st century why coun'd things have changed? I guess that isn't really a big issue with me. By the way I don't have a favorite RCT or divsion, I just play the side in the battle thats left over be it any great house or clan.

I wasn't talking about all weapons in general, I should've specified. Some of it makes sense, like large lasers, AC-2s and 5s, maybe 10s, but think about how close to the ground you'd have to get to strafe with small lasers and SRMs. You're right, maybe something came along that made it practical to have a fighter carry 3 heavy autocannons as its main armament (Sabutai A). It just makes more sense to me to use fighters like they did in TOTC: Shadows of War. Task Force Serpent equipped fighters with TAG and underslung Arrow IV missles, the TAG-equipped fighters spotting for all the others to decimate a Jag encampment. If you have the ability to employ standoff tactics, why not use them?

Being a Merc player I like units that provide mobility and value.

J. Edgar is a fave of mine for tanks. The upgraded one with a few medium lasers and C3 slave just makes it so much more dangerous than the original units.

Griffin, Whitworth, Awesome and 'swaybacks'. These units would generally fill out the ranks of my merc forces due to price and what they bring to the 'party'. Sure there may be variants like the Wolverine WVR-6M, WHM-6D, VL-5T, JR7-F and 'Mirage' Firestarter that I would like to get my hands on, but being a person that understands the improbabilities of having armies filled with these rarer units I accept that being a merc and learn to use what I could get my hands on. I don't play large factions as such, nor any 'canon' force (eg being a merc and playing Wolf's Dragoons), I just prefer playing small merc units trying to get bigger without being wiped out.... which is always fun.

Actually there are a surprising number of cross-branch weapons. The Army uses the Sidewinder as a surface to air missile in the chaparell. There is a proposed version of the AMRAAM to be used on Humvees as SAMs, as well as the Navy using the Sparrow AIM-7 as a boat launched SAM. The 30mm canon used by most fighters has a home in the Phalanx and several other army vehicles. The TOW missile is used by both Helicopters and Ground vehicles (M-901, bradley, HUMVEEs, and some LAV25s) The Hellfire was developed for the Apahce, but had made appearances on some ground vehicles and now the RQ-9 Predator. The 50 Caliber gun that was developed for use by the army was used as the main AA gun from 1930s to 1960s. The upcoming Common Missile program will be used by the Army, AF, MArines, and Navy. The Airforce uses Army BOFORS cannons in their AC-130s. I believe the Hawk SAM was used for a period on AF aircraft. The Harpoon is used both from aboard ships and from aircraft. (As well as SLAM) The ASROC is used by both ships and Navy A/C. Don't forget that the Navy used the same torpedoes on surface ships, subs, and Aircraftduring WWII. I wouldn't be surprised if the still do. I'm sure there are other cross-bred weapons out there that I can't think of. Oh yeah, and that was just US cross-breeding.

I know that different branches of today's militaries use the same equipment, and I'm not saying that it doesn't make sense for it to happen at all. I'm just saying it doesn't make sense with some Battletech weapons, like 20-shot missle launchers and dumbfire rockets with very short range, or massive autocannons with no range. Putting those kinds of weapons on fighters (note fighters, not other kinds of craft, like the Spector gunship for example) to me is just asking for it. Of course, since this is a "balanced" game, I guess it wouldn't make sense to have stand-off missles and artillery that can be called in from miles away.

My Faves are many.

To get more specific: Savannah Master, Bandit, all other kinds of fast tanks, hovers etc.

I like all unseen Mechs.
I also like the Blackwell Powerman 1b. (A creation you can find on battletech.info search for it. )
And so many others Clanmechs Inner Sphere designs, Warships and so on. That´s the good thing in BT.
There´s something for everyone.

There is another reason for interchangeable weapons. An army fights with the weapons it has available. If your supply lines are light years in length and battlefield salvage are normal parts of combat. Than you will become quite cost conscious and start using readily available weapons. Even if they are not optimum in design or performance. Besides an autocannon round or a missle launched at a ground target will hit the ground. So launch enough rounds and eventually you will destroy your target.
