Star League Battlemech Contract #4590-A:

Needed: A mech for front line service, that can stand up to the best weapons on the battlefield and still give as good as it gets. This battlemech must have a top speed of no less 80kph and should not cost no the half as much as the current Shadow Hawk mech, (circa 3050).

The mechs' parts must be from sources that are willing and able to supply the SLDF and will not delay parts do to political problems. Mass of the mech should not exceded 55 tons.

Weapon array and over all setup of the mech is left to each company to settle on, the only requiriment from the SLDF is no Cappllean technology at this time.

Please submit your bids and prototypes as soon as possible.

Step right up and take a look at the latest and greatest in mech warfare. I present to you some of the leading front line designs currently (or soon to be) available from the many fine mech manufactures I represent.

First, I assume since you wish to avoid any Cappllean tech, you would not be interested in the upgraded VND-5l Vindicator by Ceres Metal Industries?

So, allow me to also point out the SDH-7A and -7K upgrades to the tried and true ShadowHawk from Lang Industries.

And of course there's the ENF-8R Enforcer packaged from Achernar BattleMechs.

(specifications for these mechs can all be found in this forum, or I will repost them under this thread if desired.)

Now, my next posts will present additional new designs, still in the prototyping stage, ether of which we are sure will meet SDLF's requirements. I'm sure that, whichever mech is ultimately declared the contract winner, it will be one from a firm represented by my firm, Chaotic Consulting, Ltd. We look forward to doing business with you.

Overview: 13
The original upgrade of the venrible ShadowHawk, while
adiquate, left something to be desired. With newer, more
capible models coming off the line, Lang Industries found
that sales of the SHD-5M had fallen to almost nil.
Designers went back to the drawing board, bringing with
them battlefiled data from after action reports. Stripping
the basic SHD chasis bare, they started in fresh with an
eye toward what Mechwarriors had been complaining
about. The resulting mech stayed true to the original jack
of all trades design, but greatly enhanced all around
performance. Currently undergoing limited field testing to
determine it's combat value, the SDH-7A shows excellent
promise.

Overview: 12
A Kurita varrient of the new SHD-7A, the -7K continues
their tradition of using PPCs. Downgrading the long range
missle rack to a Holly 10-rack provided the ability to
replace the Martel ER Large Laser with the new Donel ER
PPC. Additionaly, Kurita engineers removed 2 of the
mech's original 5 jump jets to strengthn the armor (mostly
for the legs).

A second potential varient exists in a design study (unable
to confirm construction as of yet) that downgrades the
Holly SSRM-4 rack to a -2 rack and adds the Artimis fire
control system to the LRM rack.

VND-5L Vindicator

Communications System: CeresCom Model 21-Rs
Targeting & Tracking System: C-Apple Churchill

Overview: 22
When CMI originaly upgraded the Vindicator with
recovered technologies, they did so haphazardly. Pressed
for time, they plugged in recovered tech without detailed
analasis of what was realy needed. The -5L rectifies that
situation. Going back to the original mission requirements,
they looked at the -3L model with an eye toward
improvement. The ER-PPC was an obvious keeper, as
were the new heat sinks. However, they realized they
didn't NEED as many as they had installed, and stripped
the excess. Also, the medium pulse laser turned out to be
a failure. While not a poor weapon, the Vindicator lacked
the ability to use it to it's potential, as it conflicted with it's
other weapon systems. Returning to the older model
medium lasers was called for. A second such laser was
placed on the Vindicators left arm, providing additional
close in support. Additionaly, the CMI engineers realized
they had enough space in the chasis to use the new
endosteel technologies. While bulkier, this new chasis
was much lighter. Finaly, using the accrued weight
savings, the CMI engineers upgraded teh LRM system
from a 5 rack to a 15 rack system, granting the -5L entirely
new battlefield uses.

Manufacturer(s): 1
Achernar BattleMechs
Communications System: Achernar Electronics HICS-11
Targeting & Tracking System: Federated Hunter

Overview: 23
After action reports showed that the -5D Enforcer upgrade
had a lower battlefield life expentency then it's
predicessor, the -4M. A 4 month research effort was put
into motion to find out why. Everything pointed to the -5D
being measurably better in every way, but combat apeared
to disagree. Finaly, it was tracked down the the XL
engine installation. While this allowed increased
movement and weapon loadout, it proved time and time
again to be a critical weakness as it could not be
protected by as heavy of armor. Hense, Achernar
BattleMechs redesigned the model. The new LB-X
autocannon was a success, as well as the Er Large Laser,
so both were kept. The small laser had proven totaly
useless, and so was scrapped. To make room for heavier
armor, the new chasis incorperated EndoSteel
technologies. This allowed the new design to cary even
more armor then the orginal, making it as well armored as it
could be. Additionaly, the newer "freezers" were installed,
freeing up additional tonnage used to mount a new (to this
class) weapon system - a pair of ER Medium Lasers.
overall, the new mech shows promise in testings, with
greater survivability then the original and better firepower
then the "upgrade".

Given the recent actions by the former First Lord and the resulting war between the St. Ives Compact and the Capllean Confederation, the SLDF has taken steps to cut purchases of equipment and supplies from the Confederation until as such time as we feel they have made amens for their actions.

While the idea of field upgrades, if possible, to current Vindicators already in the ranks of the SLDF are welcome, buying new war machines from the Confederation is something we are not inclined to do at this time.

Overview: 11
Designed explicitly to meet the requirements of the SDLF's
Battlemech Contract #4590-A:, the MGM-44 is a
comprimise between high firepower, high survivability, and
low cost. The MGM's short range punch is quite
impressive for it's size, but it's weaker long range punch
and lack of jump capacity limite deployment options in the
eyes of some generals. Whether or not the SLDF's
procurment board sees the same problems is unknown at
this time. Bowie Industries, however, is "betting the
house" on this design, as it's failure could result in BI being
forced to liquidate some assets to stay in business.

Cost is a serious limitation with this design, and the only reason I had to go level 3. I was actually considering a Light Engine, but it didn't work out. (It might have, had I chosen to use it exclusively, but that kind of busted the concept of a cheap but high-tech 'Mech.)

Review:

The Pitbull has impressive medium to short range firepower it lacks a ranged weapon that gives a heafty punch. We, the SLDF Testing Commitee feel that this mech does not meet the stated requirements of the contract.

We do how ever feel that the mech has use as fast scout hunter though and recommend that it be looked at for use in that role.

This model is also fitted with a Cybertech/Defiance Lightweight engine, a compromise between the extralight engine's power and the standard engine's survivability.

We have three models here that are focused around the standard ER Large Laser as the main weapon of choice. Which is a very good one to go with since it does keep the heat down as well as cost.

All three come with in the given price range and each has it's given area of usage. The comittee feels that to be fair one of each version, or revised version, should be submitted to the testing area as to allow for an overall testing and fairness.

FROM: Skobel ‘MechWorks, Vladivostock

RE: Star League BattleMech Contract #4590-A

To whom it may concern,

We believe that Skobel ‘MechWorks of Terra is the company for which you are looking. Since our factories are all located on Terra, in the heart of the Star League, we will be able to supply you with our BattleMechs without concerns of blockade actions, trade union disputes, or internal politicking. We have identified one of the BattleMechs currently being investigated at our firm with computer simulations, the MEG-X Megaera as being a concept model which answers your design requirements quite well. We have sent the design specifications to you for review per your request.

Type: MEG-X Megaera
Technology Base: Inner Sphere, Star League 2750
Mass: 50 Tons
Chassis: MEG Endo Steel
Power Plant: Skobel 250
Cruising Speed: 54.0 kph
Maximum Speed: 86.4 kph
Jump Jets: Skobel Model 2s
Jump Capacity: 150 Metres
Armour: ALM Compound 2 with CASE
Armament:
1 Blakenburg Technologies ER Large Laser
4 Blakenburg Technologies Medium Lasers
2 Holly SRM-2s
Communications System: Skobel Model KBL-XRS8
Targeting and Tracking System: Skobel Model FLG-KNR-b
Primary Manufacturer: Skobel ‘MechWorks
Primary Factory: Vladivostock (Russia)

OVERVIEW

Megaera was one of the three legendary Greek Furies who punished Orestes. It is known, however, that Megaera was much more friendly towards humans (and human males) than either of her sisters, Alecto and Tisiphone. It is hoped that this BattleMech will display the same battlefield prowess and tenacity as the Furies of myth.

CAPABILITIES

Per your standing order the Megaera weighs in at under 55 tons; in this case, 50 tons. Again at your behest, its top speed is 84.6 kilometres per hour. It is also equipped with maximum armour coverage for its class, boasting 11 tons of armour. It is also capable of jumping up to 150 metres.

As you have not specified expected combat environment nor expected battlefield role, we have sought to equip the 'Mech with a variety of weapons, allowing the 'Mech to perform any role with ease.

Its primary weapon is the Blakenburg Technolgies ER Large Laser, allowing the BattleMech to engage targets up to 630 metres away. This weapon is backed up by a trio of each Medium Lasers and SRM-2s. The SRM-2s are equipped with two tons of ammunition, allowing the pilot to load NARC-homing ammunition or Inferno rockets at their choice.

VARIANTS

We are prepared to supply the following variants at your request:

MEG-X2: By removing the SRM-2 packs, plus a small amount of rear armour, we can replace the ER Large Laser with the more powerful Kinslaughter H-Class ER PPC. A fourth medium laser, and a pair of Small Lasers for antipersonnel operations, will be added to the torso superstructure. By adding another two Heat Sinks, the BattleMech can use the bulk of its weaponry without concerns for heat. This is an excellent vehicle for skirmisher units or units which receive only limited resupply runs, as it requires no ammunition.

MEG-X3: Intended as a command model, the MEG-X3 is equipped with an ECM Suite, Active Probe, and TAG designator. Its weapons load is somewhat diminished; the MEG-X3 carries only three Medium Lasers, plus the ER Large Laser of the standard model. However, this variant is equipped with enough heat sinks to be able to fire all of its weapons and jumping whilst building up only marginal heat.

DEPLOYMENT

We can retool our Vladivostock production lines and commence production of the Megaera within a month. Following that, we should be able to build 4 Megaeras per month.

COST ANALYSIS

At your request, we used only limited high-technology equipment on the Megaera. The standard model is only 4,856,000 Star League Credits to produce, well beneath the budget of 5,148,429 Star League Credits we were given. The MEG-X2 will only cost 4,864,250 credits; even the most expensive in the series will cost just 5,295,500 credits-only slightly above the budget even though it is equipped with an admirable array of EW equipment.

BATTLE VALUES

MEG-X: 1,297
MEG-X2: 1,418
MEG-X3: 1,469

HISTORICAL NOTE

Despite its impressive bid for the contract, Skobel MechWorks failed in it attempt to win the contract, which was eventually awarded to Blue Shot’s Starslayer.

MY BLURB

Here you go, Karagin. I designed this 'Mech entirely from your fluff standpoint; I could have done a lot more, but it would have compromised one, some, or all of your design points. I assumed we were building this for the original Star League, so I ruled out certain weapons at the outset. Even with the self-imposed limitation of 2750 technology, this thing did not work out too badly.

It should be noted that I am a bit of an Inferno junkie, which is why the SRMs have so much ammo. Perhaps you might like to put another Medium Laser or 2 Small Lasers on instead of the second ton of ammo.

FROM: Crosby 'Mech Research Firm, Luthien

RE: Star League BattleMech Contract #4590-A

To whom it may concern,

We at the Crosby 'Mech Research Firm have recently been contracted by the DCMS to provide the Combine with a BattleMech that can replace the old Kintaro found on our front-lines. We have obtained permission from First Lord (and Coordinator of the Draconis Combine), Theodore Kurita, to offer the same design to you for review. Although our small factories will not be able to produce large numbers of the 'Mech for the SLDF, we are prepared to sell the liscencing rights to the Com Guards, and the Wolf’s Dragoons, with the understainding that a portion of the BattleMechs produced at those facilities will be made available to the DCMS. These groups should provide enough manufacturing power to meet your needs. Should this bid be accepted, the greater demand for our machinery will lower overall costs for both the DCMS and SLDF. We also understand that our MRM system is foreign to most SLDF technicians and are prepared to offer a training course in its maintenance to any interested parties.

Type: SS-O Sassori
Technology Base: Inner Sphere, Draconis Combine 3060
Mass: 55 Tons
Chassis: SS Endo Steel
Power Plant: Core Tek 275
Cruising Speed: 54.0 kph
Maximum Speed: 86.4 kph
Armour: SS with CASE
Armament:
3 Shigunga MRM-10 Launchers
3 Diverse Optics Type 428 ER Medium Lasers
2 Diverse Optics Type 810 ER Small Lasers
Communications System: Wasat Type 2
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor Type 8b
Primary Manufacturer: Crosby 'Mech Research Firm
Primary Factory: Luthien

OVERVIEW

The Sassori (Scorpion) is a new BattleMech being tested out on Luthien. As a practical neccessities, it had to cost not much more than the Kintaro, and incorporate similar weaponry in similar locations. It would also have to be an easy 'Mech for the hordes of inexperienced MechWarriors who have flooded into the DCMS under the ageis of the Phoenix Programs. The Sassori has performed well in all tests so far, and we believe that it meets the criteria set out under your contract bid.

CAPABILITIES

This BattleMech has been designed for ease of use. A trio of MRMs allow the pilot to inflict heavy damage upon an opponent. Opponents of the MRM argue that its MRMs do not have sufficient range to adequetely engage an opponent, but recent studies have indicated that as a direct result of new technologies introduced in recent years, 90% of battlefield combat between BattleMechs occurs at ranges of 400 metres or less, where the MRM’s limited range is inconsequential.

Further firepower is provided by the trio of Medium Lasers mounted across the arms and head of the 'Mech. These lasers are in their ER variant, allowing the pilot to target enemies up to 360 metres away.

Finally, ,the 'Mech is equipped with a pair of ER Small Lasers, allowing it to engage in limited anti-infantry operations.

VARIANTS

We are prepared to offer several variants on the base chassis, all of which are more expensive and use Ferro-Fibrous armour plating.

SS-O2: This variant removes the Centre Torso MRM rack and replaces it with an ER Large Laser for long-range combat. This variant, though more expensive, is slowly gaining favour amongst test pilots because of the ER Large Laser’s range capabilities.

SS-O3: This variant will remove the ER Medium Laser in the 'Mech’s head to mount a C3 Slave unit. The DCMS is deploying C3 units at a record rate, and the SLDF has begun to use them in limited deployment as well.

SS-O4: This radical variant requires a major overhaul of the design, removing one MRM and the head-mounted ER Medium Laser in order to equip the 'Mech with an ER Small Laser and a C3 Master Computer.

SS-O5: This variant mounts standard medium lasers in place of the ER models, trading in range for greater heat dissipation abilities.

DEPLOYMENT

The DCMS wants us to begin production by the end of the year.

COST ANALYSIS

The SS-O costs only 5,030,731 C-Bills, well under the specified budget of 5,148,429 C-Bills we were given. The SS-O2 costs 5,375,606 C-Bills, massively over budget. This cost is, however, directly attributable to the use of the ER Large Laser. Likewise, the SS-O3, equipped with cutting-edge C3 equipment, costs a monstrous 5,639,106 C-Bills The SS-O4 is the most expensive of the series, because it uses a C3 Master Computer, and costs 7,424,474 C-Bills. The SS-O5, cheapest of the ER Large Laser series because of its Standard Medium Lasers, costs 5,189,606 C-Bills, which is comparable to the original Shadow Hawk.

BVs

SS-O: 1,174
SS-O2: 1,210
SS-O3: 1,201 (+140 for C3)
SS-O4: 1,297 (+123 for C3)
SS-O5: 1,233

MY BLURB

Hhmmm….

This did not work out as well as I had hoped it would. It did not even come in under budget in most cases. Ah well. It appears the MRMs were a bit of a mistake, since they took up too much tonnage to make them worthwhile.

I embarked on the series using Ferro-Fibrous and ER Large Lasers because of what I felt were flaws in the standard, MRM-equipped model.

Movement is hampered because it does not have Jump Jets, but other than that it should be a solid performer.

Overall, though, I would prefer a Megaera to this.

OVERVIEW

Ever since we first purchased Crab-Class BattleMechs from the Com Guards, we have relied upon them in battle. These 'Mechs have developed a reputation for toughness and heavy firepower, and are favourites amongst our line forces. Once the standard-issue Medium 'Mech in the Star League, we hope that it will assume its place once more.

CAPABILITIES

Now equipped with Double Heat Sinks and ER Lasers, the Crab has found a new life on the battlefield. Paired Blakenburg Large Lasers provide the Crab with 180 metres of additional range, allowing it to engage enemies at extreme distances. The trio of ER Medium Lasers which have replaced and added to the old Medium and Small lasers used by the original likewise add to its engagement profiles.

On this BattleMech, the high-heat ER Lasers are most welcome. In fact the 'Mech can dissipate nearly 90% of its total heat output.

VARIANTS

The Com Guard are willing to offer their expertise and have graciously offered to share their CRB-C3i refit with both the DCMS and the SLDF. We are also prepared to offer a model which employs Triple Strength Myomers.

DEPLOYMENT

The Com Guard have already deployed their variant, outlined below. We have already begun limited production on Luthien, sending 3 Crabs per month out to our front-line forces.

COST ANALYSIS

The standard-model Crab costs 4,640,374 C-Bills. The TSM model costs 5,690,374 C-Bills.

BVs

CRB-SLDF: 1,214
CRB-TSM: 1,270

MY BLURB

Most of what I have to say about the Crab is in the Com Guard Retrofit thing I did, presented below. The whole Black Knight thing has had me looking at a lot of old SLDF designs, and I will post my retrofits here as they become available. Until then, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

OVERVIEW

After the spectacular failures of the CRB-30 Crab during its training and testing cycles, we have been forced to consider other avenues for upgrading the venerable and common Crabs serving in the Com Guards. This relatively simple upgrade is currently being tested, and initial reports are much more promising than those of the CRB-30.

CAPABILITIES

Swapping the old RAM Tech Large Lasers of the Star League model for more advanced and available ER Large Lasers, the new Crab almost doubles its striking range. Also upgraded are the smaller Ceres Arms Medium laser and ExoStar Small laser found on the older Crabs; they have been replaced with a trio of ER Medium Lasers.

The Crab’s dilapidated single heat sinks were replaced with a new set of ‘freezers’, and four extra heat sinks were added to the chassis. Although this provides the Crab with 60% greater heat dissipation, the Crab cannot use its ER Large Lasers in tandem with the ER Mediums. However, using all of its armament save a single ER Large Laser allows the Crab to inflict serious damage whilst still running cool.

DEPLOYMENT

Still undergoing testing on Luthien, the CRB-C3i Crab is expected to begin deployment late next year.

MY BLURB

Ugh. How can those howling barbarians at FASA call the CRB-30 a Crab with a straight face? XL Engine, ER PPCs…they made a mockery of one of the best 50-tonners in existence.

This is not much better, but it remains closer to the Crab’s roots, and also does not employ one of those $#@&ing Inner Sphere XL Engines.

to medium range, it is armed with 1 Diverse Optics ER Medium Laser
and 3 Diverse Optics Medium Pulse Lasers.

1 Medium Pulse Laser
Manufacturer: Unknown
Primary Factory: Unknown
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
The CBN-2C Cambion is the latest attempt by the
unsuccessful-yet-still-ambitious designers from Johnson 'Mechworks
Inc. In response to SLDF contract #4590-A, the Cambion design was
thrown together and, if selected, will represent the first JMInc.
design to actually see production. The 'Mech's rather simple design
and abundant auxiliary weapons systems allow for a variety of minor
variants to optimize it for battle- or pilot-specific preferences.
(Warning to testers: the so-called "working prototype" is not nearly
as "working" as it appears. The ER Medium laser was scavenged from a
battlefield after more than a year exposed to the elements, the LA
medium laser is as likely as not to short out, disabling the central
targeting system, and the LRM-15, while impressive-looking, is
actually a replica shell built into the torso, since JMInc. was
unable to aquire one for real) Since there is currently no
production facility, the factory, when built, can be outfitted to
accomodate whatever makes and models of equipment requested by the
SLDF.

Capabilities:
The CBN-2C Cambion is a surprisingly versatile 'Mech. The
odd-looking mismatched LRMs provide substantial long-range fire, and
the mixed bag of lasers are likely to discourage many light 'Mechs
from closing inside the LRMs' minimum range. Heat buildup is
negligible unless the LRMs are fired at close range, and even then, a
single Alpha Strike is unlikely to cause severe heat problems. The
'Mech is designed without lower arms, allowing the four arm-mounted
lasers to be fired to the rear if necessary. The designers opted
against incuding CASE in the main design, but risk of an ammo hit is
slight--the LRM-10 ammo is very difficult to hit in the head, while
the limited supply of LRM-15 rounds are likely to be spent before the
'Mech starts taking critical damage. However, many design variants
can incorporate CASE, as described below. The biggest drawback of
the design is its limited long-range endurance, but the Cambion's
good speed, heavy armor, and impressive short-range abilities can
keep it an effective fighter right to the end.

Variants:
Being only in the prototype stage, the CBN-2C Cambion has many
potential variants which can be incorporated before the 'Mech rolls
off the assembly line. One of the more promising variants, the 2L,
removes the CT Pulse Laser and adds Artemis IV FCS to each of the
missile racks. This increases its punch at long range, but at a
substantial cost. The proposed 2M variant eliminates a major worry
by adding CASE to protect the LRM ammo in the LeftTorso, and also
provides some anti-infantry support by replacing the Pulse Laser with
a pair of Machine Guns (CT/RT). The 1/2 ton of ammo is placed in the
newly-enCASEd Left Torso. The 3J plan also removes the Pulse Laser,
this time adding jump capability up to 120 metres. There are other
possible variations as well, most trading the CT lasers for CASE
(LT), light lasers, and electronics, such as a C3 slave computer.
The resulting drop in heat from the removal of the CT lasers allows
the upgrade, if desired, of the arm-mounted mediums to the more
potent ER models.

MY BLURB:
While I was tinkering around with this design, I realized that a LOT of minor modifications weer possible without seriously altering the character of the design. Additional ammo, CASE, electronics, or shuffling the lasers around are all available on request :-)
