Star Colonel Malthus had dispensed with patrols and boldly pushed ahead into the passage, only sending his [[Elemental (Battle Armor)|Elementals]] ahead to clean out the Lyran infantry. Facing the entire elite Cluster alone, the Leftenant conceived of a bold plan to save the invasion force and his friend, Prince Victor. At this critical moment, however, the Lyran Guards' command realized that the Jungblud's company had been destroyed and frontline Clan 'Mechs were pouring into the Gash. The AFFC forces had rotated their position 130° so that the Falcon Guards, if they reached the plain, would have to push through their own garrison troops to reach the Inner Sphere forces.
