David Renard was the commanding officer of all military forces on the world of Carver V during the early stages of the Civil War. As tensions between pro-Davion and pro-Steiner factions grew to fever pitch Renard declared his support for House Steiner.

The Bandit Threat
The Bandit Threat
During Carver V, Renard was tasked to handle bandits that were taking arms on the planet. He would employ the use of mercenaries on behalf of House Steiner to take control of the situation. This included task to retake a Steiner base overrun by them, capturing a bandit convoy, and investigating where the bandits are getting their equipment from. After the mercenaries found evidence that the bandits were receiving their equipment from a bandit leader named Choung Vong, Renard would send the mercenaries to the Liao portion of the planet to hunt down the bandits only to discover that the evidence was true: House Liao was supporting the bandits on Carver V. He would later order the mercenaries to attack House Liao for interfering in Steiner affairs. This included taking a weapons facility, blowing up a fuel depot, and defending against counterattacks from House Liao. Over the course of the bandit campaign, Colonel Renard began to show signs of paranoia and mistrust, first to Ambassador Yee as, "someone protecting House Liao" and later the mercenary forces he hired by telling their commander, "I have plans for Carver and you don't want to be part of it." After receiving intelligence about the Bandit Headquarters, he instructed the mercenaries to wipe out the remaining bandits and their leader. With the bandit threat gone, the mercenaries would be rewarded for their services and released from House Steiner's employ.

During Renard's stay on Carver V, his mind has shown that he has snapped. David would focus his attention on attacking a prison full of civilians, but the mercenaries were able to rescue the survivors just in time to Renard's dismay. His forces would also have to deal with both partisan and mercenary forces to combat him over the course on this world. After Jason Cho's incompetence, Mandrissa Anita Cho was forced to contact Colonel Renard for an alliance. As Jason would discuss their reasons for being here, they both agreed that they would focus their sights on Major Kelly, of House Davion. However Renard pointed out that due to the constant attacks on House Steiner, compensation must be given. His deal: death of the mercenaries, which Jason Cho gleefully agreed to. With this alliance House Steiner and House Liao would have new enemies to deal with, the partisans of Carver V, House Davion, and the Mercenary Forces.

Tyranny on Carver V
With the destruction of the Liao Palace on Carver V, House Steiner was the only faction left on the planet. Major Kelly tried to talk sense into the unstable Colonel to see reason, but Renard wanted Major Kelly to turn against the Mercenary Commander. He would even offer amnesty to her and pin the blame of the war on the mercenaries and House Liao for their roles. However Major Kelly would reject Renard's proposal and let him know that he had to be stopped. To spite her, Colonel Renard would show his true colors and challenge the mercenaries to take back a starport held by House Steiner, he would even go so far as to declare martial law on citizens with food or water supplies. The Mercenaries would succeed in this regard and later focus their sights on the unstable Colonel.

-- Colonel Renard to the Mercenary Commander before their final confrontation.

Seeing no alternative to end the tyranny of House Steiner on Carver V, Baxter and Major Kelly agreed (though the latter refused to take part in the battle) that the only way to free the planet was to eliminate Renard. After fighting through Steiner forces, Renard and his personal lance would challenge the Mercenary forces for one final duel, ending with Renard's defeat. Diaz later confirms his death by stating that Colonel Renard didn't eject from his 'Mech. With his death, Carver V would become free and was renamed Liberty.
