You had changed them, for example, from <nowiki>[[Centurion]]</nowiki> to <nowiki>[[Centurion|Centurion (BattleMech)]]</nowiki>, which actually didn't fix the problem, but simply changed the text that is displayed on a saved page. Using the | to divide links allows you to display text while linking to something different. To clarify, the text to the left of the | is the target page, and the text to the right of the | is the text to display. An example would be: <nowiki>[[Mackie|the first BattleMech]]</nowiki>, which when saved shows this: [[Mackie|the first BattleMech]]. I hope that that clarifies how those work.
