In 3034, while garrisoning the planet Loxley, Griff Storm discovered a Star League era 'Mech factory. In 3046, Griff, with his business partner Sammuel Norse, and substantial loans from the Lyran government, brought the factory online, creating Norse-Storm BattleMechs Inc. Storm's Metal Thunder remained staunchly loyal to House Steiner following the dissolution of the Federated Commonwealth and persuaded his partners in Norse-Storm to provide the Lyran Alliance exclusively with the Devastator assault 'Mech.

FedCom Civil War and Destruction
Going into the Civil War, the unit was firmly loyal to Katherine Steiner-Davion. Based on Kikuyu, they were soon sent into action along with the Sixth Donegal Guards against the Eighth Deneb Light Cavalry in January of 3063. The fight lasted several weeks, but Loyalists were ultimately successful in driving a heavily damaged Cavalry from the planet. Later, the unit was moved to Blue Hole, and after that, to Kikuyu, where they faced the Clan Jade Falcon incursion. On 7 July 3064, during the Falcon's assault, Storm made a last-ditch stand on a hill, holding the Falcons to win his people time to evacuate. One after another, the defenders were killed, saving  Storm himself for last. In the battle, the city they defended was torched and reduced to ruins. The Colonel had ignored the advice about the madness to fight at the other side of the city, too far from their DropShips, and the unit payed dearly for the mistake. The unit was considered effectively destroyed on that planet and their command was wiped out. Only two MechWarriors, the brothers Lieutenant Timothy Rivenberg and Sergeant Andrew Rivenberg, both assigned to command company, managed to board the group's two DropShips with their 'Mechs, a battered Stalker and a Salamander and evacuate, with the techs and regiment's families.

The unit remnants link up with Marshall Sharon Bryan on Melissia. These two warriors survived the fighting on that planet to join with Adam Steiner's task force during Operation AUDACITY.
