The Morgan's Holdfast system was one of five systems to be colonized between the early [[twenty-seventh century]] and the early [[twenty-eighth century]]. The capital world of the Tortuga Dominions, [[Tortuga Prime]], was colonized by the remains of the [[237th Light Cavalry Regiment]] in the closing stages of the [[Reunification War]]. The 237th being an [[Armed Forces of the Federated Suns]] [[regiment]] that took heavy damage in a wasteful military operation against [[Sterope]], leading to the survivors deserting the [[Federated Suns]]. A generation after settling Tortuga Prime, the settlers embraced a new identity, the Pirates of Tortuga, and conducted pirate raids against the Federated Suns to seize equipment and machinery to expand their initial holdings; this worked well enough that within a century, the stable and self-sufficient colony on Tortuga was well-established enough to begin the colonization of other worlds, leading to the settlement of Morgan's Holdfast and four other worlds.<ref name="TP1Ep154">''The Periphery, First Edition'', p. 14: "Tortuga Dominions"</ref>
