Carlson's Cavaliers is an unauthorized series of BattleTech novel written by Michael Keegan. The series is listed on the Amazon website as "Independently published".

Canonicity

The Carlson's Cavaliers series is entirely non-canonical and effectively amounts to mere fan fiction. Neither the author nor the publisher obtained the legal rights to publish BattleTech material. Although conceived as a commercial product, the book's content does not even qualify as apocryphal for lack of any official sanction.

Canonicity/continuity problems

The novels have been not checked for compliance with established BattleTech Canon and continuity. As a result, it does not fit into the BattleTech universe. Known issues include:

  • The Com Guard and a Precentor Martial of ComStar being in existence in the early 2900s, over a century before their official formation.
  • Military ranks within the Cavaliers seem to be greatly exaggerated, a Colonel being described as the "correct" rank for leading a company sized unit, although the rank is often traditional for merc units of various sizes.
  • The commanding officer of the Eridani Light Horse carries the rank of General. Canonically this should be Brevet-General.
  • Violation of established BattleTech universe aesthetics (arguably) through the use of genetic engineering being used to grant the characters various superpowers.

The Cavaliers unit as such stand out as having significant amounts of technology and resources to the point of seemingly numbering several Divisions in strength in the later stories, a force of such a size would have significant impact on the BattleTech universe.

Plot summary

The series follows the exploits of a genetically engineered "super soldier" Alex Carlson commander of the titular Carlson's Cavaliers consisting of a collection of rag-tag mercenaries, a sizable harem and a growing number of fellow super soldiers.
