History[edit]
The Essex was the first-of-class vessel of the second class of destroyers to bear the same name. The second Essex-class was the successor to the Naga-class destroyers, which had replaced the original Essex-class in 2645. With the competition for the successor to the Naga beginning in 2707, the SLS Essex was completed and in service in 2711, just four years later.[1]
