== Planetary History ==
While known of as a habitable world for some time prior to its colonization, Karachi was not settled until [[2287]] due to its less than ideal environment. [[Free Worlds League]] refugees fleeing conflicts along the [[Lyran Commonwealth|Lyran]] and [[Capellan Confederation|Capellan]] borders were desperate enough to make a new home for themselves on this world, with a Pakistani [[Terra|Terran]] named [[Aban Kayani]] providing the financial support to do so. While its environment was harsh, Karachi also possessed enough accessible mineral wealth to become a regional industrial center situated far away from the [[Age of War]] violence endemic to the [[Inner Sphere]].<ref name=AToW:Cp152-153/>

Throughout the [[Age of War]] and the [[Star League]] era Karachi provided the safe haven its first colonists had hoped for. Never attacked, its location near the [[Magistracy of Canopus]] enabled Karachi to serve as a supplier to the [[Star League Defense Force|SLDF]] and [[Free Worlds League Military|FWLM]] during the [[Reunification War]], resulting in a boost to military industry and the construction of [[BattleMech]] factories by [[Brigadier Corporation]]. Karachi's biggest threat during these centuries was economic dominance from the its provincial overlords in the [[Principality of Regulus]], and the [[Camlann v. Free Worlds]] decision enabled the planet to leave its parent province during the early twenty-eighth century.<ref name=AToW:Cp152-153/>

War finally came to Karachi after the Star League's collapse. During the [[First Succession War]] a deep raid by the [[Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces|LCAF]] resulted in Karachi's two industrial centers being destroyed by 100-megaton [[Nuclear Weapons|nuclear warheads]], killing twenty million people and the planet's industrial economy. While Karachi itself otherwise suffered minimal damage from this attack, the destroyed factories had provided items essential to keeping neighboring planets habitable, and many of these would become dead worlds in the decades to come.<ref name=AToW:Cp152-153/>

From the 2830s onward Karachi slowly recovered its position as an industrial hub and suffered no further attacks from other [[Successor States]]. [[Pirate]] raids were a different matter but Karachi's defense force proved capable of repelling most of these incursions. The nearby [[Marian Hegemony]], established in [[2920]], proved a wilier foe, as the Marians resorted to successful smuggling operations to steal what they needed from Karachi to ensure the viability of their new state.<ref name=AToW:Cp152-153/>

While distance prevented Karachi from benefiting from the boom in trade with the [[Federated Commonwealth]] during the 3050s, its industries were able to take advantage of the renaissance sparked by the [[Helm Memory Core|Helm Memory Core's]] discovery. In [[3064]] the planet began limited trade with the Magistracy of Canopus, although domestic development was prioritized. As a result of this reticence and its isolation, Karachi was spared the ravages of the [[Jihad]].<ref name=AToW:Cp152-153/>

== Geography == 
Karachi is primarily a rocky desert world with only 17 percent surface water and a thin atmosphere. However it is not especially hot but rather prone to sharp diurnal temperature changes. Rather than distinct continents, the planet's notable features are the Southern Ocean and Arctic Sea. The bulk of the population is concentrated around the shores and islands of the former, with most of the rest living close to the Arctic Sea.<ref name=AToW:Cp152-153/>

Surprisingly for a desert world, the bulk of long-range travel is done via watercraft due to the population being clustered around rivers and bodies of water.<ref name=AToW:Cp152-153/>
