The Sun Bear is best known as the progenitor design for the Stooping Hawk. Originally named the Prototype A, it was developed by Clan Ghost Bear as a competitor of the Stormcrow and Mad Dog designs. Eschewing bulky equipment like ferro-fibrous armor and an Endo Steel chassis, it instead used an XL engine to provide 24 tons of pod space. This was less than the pod space of the Mad Dog but slightly more than the Stormcrow.  It is slower than the Stormcrow but has more physical space for equipment. Despite these advantages, the Sun Bear ultimately was not favored by Clan Ghost Bear. The Prototype As entered service under the name of Sun Bear. The design was beloved by its pilots and it frequently went to the most aggressive pilots in the Bear touman.

Only five of the Sun Bear/Prototype A were built by the Bears, all but one of which one are now gone. One was lost in the Trial of Possession with the Blood Spirits. Another was tested to destruction by Ghost Bear techs. Of the remaining three, two were lost in combat: one was destroyed in the Tukayyid fighting after defeating the Twenty-Second Rasalhagian Free Company on Vipaava, and one Sun Bear was destroyed defending a Ghost Bear asteroid mining facility from a Dark Caste raid. The last remaining example was lost to Clan Goliath Scorpion during Operation Revival. Clan Goliath Scorpion would later use the salvaged 'Mech during their absorption of the 71st Light Horse Regiment of the Eridani Light Horse.
