#REDIRECT [[BattleTechWiki:Awards]]

It is the custom to reward registered BattleTechWiki contributors for hard work and due diligence by presenting them a '''ribbon''' as an '''award'''. To give the award to someone, just place the image on their talk page (Admins may place them on the recipient's main page, in an awards board), and say why you have given it to them. If you are sure the award is appropriate, ''don't be shy!''

Awards for various examples of wiki participation are not unique to BattleTechWiki.  Some years ago, some wiki-based communities, starting with [http://meatballwiki.org/wiki/ MeatballWiki] began to give their users awards called ''barn stars'', using a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_anchor star anchor] to represent the concept of the shared work experience, as in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barn_raising barn raising].

While awarding a ribbon, remember to provide relevant and polite text as to why you are awarding it. The awards currently in use can be found on the '''[[BattleTechWiki:Awards|Awards]]''' project page. If you don't feel any of these covers the topics you are concerned with, you can always design your own award (using those examples, if you like).

There are many types of ribbons, with more on the way. Please make sure that your choice is fair and appropriate, which will help prevent over-use. Remember that there are other ways of showing simple appreciation to someone, such as a comment on the user's talk page, and alternative awards such as graphics of cookies, beer, cakes, emoticons or any other graphical method of displaying thanks.

==Official Awards==

Award ribbons come in four categories:

*[[BattleTechWiki:Awards#Founder.27s_Awards|Founder's Awards]]: awarded by the site's founder, [[User:Nicjansma|Nicjansma]]

*[[BattleTechWiki:Awards#Admins.27_Awards|Admins' Awards]]: granted by Admins

*[[BattleTechWiki:Awards#Editors.27_Awards|Editors' Awards]]: granted by all Editors

*[[BattleTechWiki:Awards#Automatic_Awards|Automatic Awards]]: self-granted

Ribbons granted as a repetition of a previous but similar award are shown on the recipient's awards board with [[BattleTechWiki:Awards#Devices|devices]] per the number of the awards received, as depicted in each award's gallery. The awarder has the option of presenting the award on the recipient's talk page either as the original ribbon or as the appropriately 'be-deviced'. (''Ex: "I award you the Random Act of Appreciation Award with 3 bronze oakleaves in lieu of your 4th award."'')

An additional device is the Founder's Frame, which is an acknowledgment that an act worthy of an Admins' or Editors' award has been witnessed by [[User:Nicjansma|Nicjansma]].

===Adding an official ribbon===

If you would like a ribbon to be added to the official awards list, please discuss it at the [[BattleTechWiki talk:Awards|Awards talk page]]. Please don't add it without discussion.

===Useage===

To grant an award, an Editor opens a discussion on the recipient's talk page, and provides the graphic by inserting the appropriate code (found on the award's gallery) along with relevant and polite text as to why it is being granted. An example of such a discussion, before '''Save page''' submission,  might look like the following:

:<nowiki> ==Thank you== </nowiki><br>

:'''<nowiki>[[File:RAA_3bol.jpg|Random Act of Appreciation Award, 4th ribbon]] </nowiki>'''<br>

:<nowiki><br></nowiki><br>

:MechWarrior Extreme, because of your awesome improvement of my work on the [[Brotherhood of Randis]] article, I award you the Random Act of Appreciation Award with 3 bronze oakleaves in lieu of your 4th award. <nowiki>--~~~~</nowiki>

which would appear thusly:

:==Thank you==

:'''[[File:RAA_3bol.jpg|Random Act of Appreciation Award, 4th ribbon]]'''<br>

:<br>

:MechWarrior Extreme, because of your awesome improvement of my work on the [[Brotherhood of Randis]] article, I award you the Random Act of Appreciation Award with 3 bronze oakleaves in lieu of your 4th award. --[[User:Revanche|Revanche]] ([[User_talk:Revanche|talk]]|[[Special:Contributions/Revanche|contribs]]) 16:46, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

===Precedence and Repetition===

Official ribbons, when displayed on a user's awards board, are depicted in a sequential hierarchy of nominal importance, or order of precedence. This order is provided on the '''[[BattleTechWiki:Awards#Precedence|Awards]]''' project page. Subsequent code, therefore, would be inserted into the [[BattleTechWiki:Awards#Boards|awards board code]] before lesser awards. Awards presented by Nicjansma with a Founder's Frame are of higher precedence than the same standard award (though lower in precedence than the next higher standard award). When both are present, they are both displayed on the awards board.

Currently, the official awards program only allows for up to 10 presentations of the same ribbon on the (active) awards board. When an eleventh award is granted, the previous award (i.e., the 10th, with the gold coin) is replaced by a 1st award ribbon and the 10th award is moved to the Previously Awarded Board, which depicts all retired awards, including multiple 10th awards of the same ribbon.
