Founded in 1934 by Wilhelm Heyne as (Wilhelm) Heyne Verlag, this German publishing house published the German translation of the BattleTech line of novels from 1990 onwards as part of their Heyne Science Fiction brand of softcover publications.

Shortly after the death of Rolf Heyne in 2001, the publishing house was sold first to the Axel Springer AG and two years later, in 2003, to Bertelsmann AG, who maintain it as an imprint of their Random House publishing label.
