As backers did not get to see a first draft of the character biography prior to the release of the game, I was unable to review the character bio prior to the release of the game. I contacted HBS as soon as I'd read the character bio to have it edited. I had erroneously assumed that it would be best to give an absolute bare-bones idea so that people that write for a living could have creative freedom. The edited character was almost verbatim the first character I'd made in Mechwarrior 2nd edition, or any RPG period. In spite of being a formulaic character, it holds nostalgia for me.

Shinsei Ohbayashi was born to a middle-class family in the Federated Suns, under the name Michael Woods. He grew up loyal to House Davion, as every child did. He even attended the Robinson Battle Academy, where his loyalty to House Davion was complemented by indoctrination with the hatred for the Draconis Combine so common in Robinson graduates.

But Michael Woods never graduated from Robinson Battle Academy. During a live fire exercise one bleak night, something unspeakable happened. He was cut off, abandoned, and "Michael Woods" never emerged from those dark woods. Shinsei Ohbayashi did instead. In one bloody instant, everything he'd been taught his entire life inverted. It was the Draconis Combine that understood the right way of living, the correct approach to battle. The evil of the Federated Suns could not be overstated.

At first, he made an effort to rescue his loved ones from the same blindness he'd been victim of. But after they rejected him rather than listen, he left the Federated Suns, fleeing before they could hunt him down. Now, he considers himself a loyal servant of House Kurita, and hopes via service to the Draconis Combine to become worthy of a place in their ranks. Meanwhile, he keeps his skills and his hatred-sharp by working as a mercenary out in the Periphery, for whoever will hire him.

History[edit]

Michael Woods was born to a middle-class family in the Federated Suns. He grew up saluting House Davion, as every child did, and when he was grown, he applied for and was accepted to a trial program on Robinson that would eventually become the rebuilt Robinson Battle Academy. While there, he witnessed the growth of the anti-Kurita indoctrination program, and participated in the development of the unique Robinson Battle Academy culture.

It was a notable opportunity, but a risky one. Eventually, Michael Woods, with his practical middle-class values, became a liability to the dominating philosophy of the future Academy. During a training raid on Delacruz, Michael was sent deep behind enemy lines for recon, and then left behind.

But Michael Woods, practical and well-trained, survived. He adopted a local name to hide his identity, and masqueraded as a member of the unproductive class until he could secure transport off-world.

At first, he expected all the horror stories fed to him about the Combine to be the truth, but quickly learned that not only had much of what he'd been taught had been a gross vilification, but numerous atrocities his own forces had committed were never spoken of. Selling his services as an unlicensed mercenary to the Delacruz yakuza oyabun, and eventually to other private concerns, he quickly gained a reputation for skill in reconnaissance and guerrilla campaigns. Now, he considers himself a loyal servant of House Kurita, and hopes to one day strike back at his former COs who left him for dead.

Canonicity[edit]

Michael "Ice Trey" Woods is one of 62 MechWarriors designed by BattleTech (video game) Kickstarter backers of Mercenary Mechcommander and above. Featured only in the apocryphal computer game BattleTech video game, the character is considered apocryphal as well.[1]
