Light Mortar

Overview

The Mortar (Light) is a type of smooth-bore indirect fire artillery light enough to be carried by infantry.[1] It fires a finned shell, which is propelled into the air on an arching trajectory by a small charge ignited by a firing pin inside the mortar. The mortar can fire a wide variety of shells, including anti-personnel, FASCAM, flare, flash, gas, high-explosive, inferno, smoke and stun. Because of their method of firing, mortars have a minimum range where they are unable to hit a target.

Light mortars are operated by a crew of two and typically fire shells 80mm in diameter. Their light weight makes them easier to transport than the heavier type at the cost of launching much smaller ordinance.[2]
