History[edit]

Nelson "Winger" Blackbird was one of those who served in the Seventeenth Recon Regiment, also known as Camacho's Caballeros, and was one of those on active duty with the Caballeros in 3056 when they were employed by Chandrasekhar Kurita to provide security for one of his companies, Hachiman Taro Enterprises. Nelson was a Lieutenant Junior Grade at the time, piloting a Jenner in Bronco Company, under the command of Captain Kali "Lady K" MacDougall.[1]

On the evening of the 15th of October 3056, Nelson was one of two MechWarriors patrolling the north wall of the HTE headquarters compound in Masamori, the capital city of Hachiman, when the Internal Security Force made an attempt to penetrate the compound, using a terrorist attack by the Word of Blake as a cover. Nelson's 'Mech was knocked out right at the start of the raid, when a missile hit the cockpit of his 'mech, leaving it unmoving and unresponsive to communications from the rest of the regiment.[1]

The attack on the compound saw Captain Juan Pedro "Don Coyote" O'Rourke killed when the attackers overheated his Phoenix Hawk using Inferno missiles; unknown to the other members of the regiment at the time, Nelson was alive inside his 'Mech, and spent the entire of the battle either raging uselessly, or singing his death song in anticipation of the attackers using inferno rounds on him as well. It was determined after the battle that the missile that had hit Nelson's Jenner hadn't even penetrated his cockpit armor, but it had broken circuits and unseated essential microchips, as well as warping the cockpit hatch.[2]

Nelson's Jenner was actually the subject of a minor dispute between the Caballero's Chief Technician, Captain Marshal "Astro Zombie" Harris, and their Chief Aztech, Master Sergeant Richard "Zuma" Gallegos, with the later convinced that the Jenner was one of the first of her class ever made and appropriately temperamental, while the former declared that it couldn't possibly be the case, based on the serial numbers of her various components.<ref name="CQp128">
