Acceptable Losses is a short story by Adam Neff that was published in the thirteenth issue of Shrapnel.
Plot Summary[edit]
Red Stables MechWarrior Zarek Hanlon, is urgently awakened in the early hours of the morning and mobilized by Corporal Amata Singh, A suspected pirate DropShip is inbound and likely to raid the DuraPaq Solutions owned DropShip service depot, their unit is assigned to guard. Captain Josef Dvorak, emphasizes that the unit must protect the service depot. Hanlon is assigned to cover the unit's flank. A lone pirate 'Mech attacks the city of Cide Unidas instead of the expected depot. Concerned about the inhabitants Hanlon ignores his orders and races to stop the 'Mech. After a long chase that inflicted substantial damage to the city, Hanlon manages t fell the pirate 'Mech. When returning to his unit, Hanlon finds the rest of his lance crushed, Corporal Singh dead, and the pirates gone.
Captain Dvorak is furious about Hanlon's disobedience of orders and discharges him from the unit. Later Harlon realizes that he also been permanently blacklisted by DuraPat Solutions. However, a receptionist whose family has been saved by Harlon's actions shows his gratitude by telling him where to store his 'Mech and search for new jobs.
