Even though he was a distant relative of the Orloff nobility, Mattheo believed he could only affect the outcome of combat through his own effort and skill. Mattheo spent hours each day training his body and mind through rigorous physical fitness and mental training exercises. The men and women under Mattheo's command respected him for his commitment to share the hardships they endured in combat and, while many outside his unit believed he would become just another noble rising through the ranks due to family connections, he vowed to prove them all wrong.[1]
During the attack on Sophie's World as part of Operation TRIUMVIR in August 3146, the First Grenadiers managed to keep the First Regulan Hussars locked in a stalemate for two months. Mattheo's company proved instrumental to this outcome, as they used their mobility and resilience to constantly harass the Regulans' positions. After Captain-General Jessica Marik's assassination, the First Grenadiers were one of the first Free Worlds League units to counterattack against the Regulan Fiefs. On Tiber, with the support of Clan Sea Fox's Spina Khanate, the First Grenadiers forced the First Regulan Hussars back to the Earthwerks-FWL facility outside of Umbria City. Mattheo used the mountains surrounding the factory for cover as he repeatedly sniped at the Hussars and his efforts in defeating the Regulans was considered likely to earn him a promotion.[2]
