Ronald Marley was a noble, from the Free Worlds League, as of 2820.[1]

History[edit]

In 2820 Viscount Marley was interim Director-General of New Pittsburgh, a city on Chertan, which was facing food shortages due to damage caused by the First Succession War. A man keenly devoted to justice, after a several individuals were convicted and sentenced to death for killing a number of security guards at a meatpacking plant during a food riot, Marley personally reviewed their cases and became convinced they had been the victim of judicial irregularities including the exclusion of evidence which suggested they were not present at the time of the crime.

Marley therefore ordered the release of the prisoners, despite this being wildly unpopular with the world's general population, who wished to see who they considered to be serious criminals executed. This action enraged Captain-General Thaddeus Marik when he eventually heard about it, with the result he commanded Marley to be stripped of all his titles, lands and property. As the Captain-General's punishment extended even to forbidding anyone on Chertan from employing Marley, the now destitute former noble was seen for weeks afterwards begging on the streets of New Pittsburgh for the money needed to arrange transport to another planet.[1]
