Jim McCullough, a young kid of Bamburgh, wents to a restaurant and finds it being closed. After he began walking home, he is taken by Kate Mulligan, a young girl he felt attracted to. They talked about how their planet would be abandoned by all JumpShip traffic, and how it would fell into anarchy. After arriving at Jim's home, his family invites her to dinner.
While they have a barbecue, Jim's family talks with Kate about a plan they have made to get enough money to buy tickets off planet. The plan is to bring down a 'Mech, take one of its weapons, and sell it in order to pay for the passage. Kate agrees to join. On the next day, they depart for the heist. The find the 'Mech engaged in a battle, and managed to down and shut down the 'Mech after puting it on fire. Jim and Kate can't let the man burn alive, and rescue him instead. The mercenary shows his gratitude by offering to bring the couple off planet, which both accept. In order to get to the DropShip in time, they take an abandoned truck from the battlefield. Arriving in time they board the ship that soon descends. This is when Jim and Kate promise to each other to start over together somewhere else.
Meanwhile, the rest of Jim's family still tries to steal the weapon and by then isn't visible anymore. They appear to have been captured and executed by the opposing fighters.
