Will was once a member of the ComGuards and married with another Guard, Anna. Both fought at the Battle of Tukayyid in 3052, fighting at the Kozice valley against Clan Diamond Shark. There, he lost Anna, and survived. By his own words, Will didn't see much action and didn't learn much about the Clans. Broken by his loss, he left the Guards and settled on the planet Umka, in the Free Worlds League. He joined the militia and, despite his limited battle experience, he gave suggestions to his superior, Commander Azzat, to better adapt the militia 'Mechs to the planetary situation.
On 18 May 3061, he was in his Mech hangar, painting his 'Mech, and had to remind his lancemate Ken his duty to do the same, as he was losing the time trying to seduce a young female tech.[1]
Three days later, Will assisted in a meeting of militia officers. Azzat consulted him, because they were facing what appeared to be a raid by a Clan Jade Falcon unit intending to claim the planet. Will was unable to help his superior much but found the message from the Clanner commander, Chris Moon, strange. After the gathering, his mate Adetutu boarded him. Will still wore his late wife's ring, and had refused to talk about Tukayyid, but Adetutu convinced him to open his heart and tell her everything what happened.
Will, along with his unit, reached Tenelid on 21 May, a fishing village attacked by the Clanners, and found it in flames with all the population slaughtered. That only increased Will's suspicions, as they didn't behave as the Clanners he had fought. After finding some survivors and interrogate them, the militia departed in persecution of the killers. After finding them, Ken broke formation to attack them, and the rest of the unit had to fight harder to protect him, and the same happened in the next battle. When Adetutu's Spider was downed, Will was furious, and challenged Moon to a duel, and downed the Clanner's Hatchetman. After downing it, he ran to rescue Adetutu, finding her alive.
On 24 May, Will was with Adetutu visiting Ken in the hospital, and knew than, with she at his side, he could be happy again.
