Born to two Donegal University professors, Kaatje Van Pelt didn't follow her parents into teaching, but instead joined the SLDF and attended the War Academy of Mars. With a solid record of achievement throughout her career, she was promoted to lead XXXVIII Corps in 2757, but found the posting difficult.
A terrorist campaign waged against the SLDF on her headquarters world of Yuris by local Capellans caused her to become depressed and to drink heavily, leading her to neglect her command responsibilities.
