Unit Brief[edit]

The Alarion APM was formed as part of the newly created Federated Commonwealth's Armed Forces. The unit was created principally as a garrison force for the province capital of Alarion. The unit was noted for being one of the few militia units that made heavy use of privately-owned BattleMechs.[1]

History[edit]

Early History[edit]

The APM was created in 3041, serving as a garrison force. It saw little combat from its establishment until the FedCom Civil War, usually only deploying for disaster relief and assisting the Alliance Customs Authority.

Its most noted action prior to the Civil War was Operation CLEAN SWEEP, where the unit was deployed with the 1st Alarion Jaegers to put down a riot in Alarion's capital city of Craiova in August of 3062.[2] Due to the mass arrest of anti-Archon dissidents by the Alarion Jaegers' commander, relations between the regiment and Alarion's population soured. This led to Colonel Engle's attempts to build better ties with the ruling duke of Alarion, Anatoly Serfass.[3]

FedCom Civil War[edit]

During the early years of the FedCom Civil War, the Alarion APM remained on station on Alarion with the Jaegers. This changed in late October of 3063 after the failure of Lieutenant General Maria Esteban's 11th Arcturan Guards to delay the 6th Crucis Lancers at Virtue, leaving Alarion open to the Prince's advance. Feeling that Alarion's Jaegers and Alarion APM were not up to the task of blocking Victor Steiner-Davion's advance, Esteban ordered them to cease garrison duties on Alarion and rendezvous with her forces at Carlisle. The militia would thus conduct its first combat duty since its formation as part of what would later be referred to as the 11th Arcturan Battlegroup.[4]

Battle for York[edit]

As part of the 11th Arcturan's growing Task Force, General Esteban moved the Alarion APM to York to set her "Prince Trap". There with the recently acquired Carlisle APM, the two militia units became bait for Victor Steiner-Davion's task force, which arrived in early 3065. Taking the role of a garrison force stationed outside the area known as the Salibury Plains, the unit drew the attention of the 6th Crucis Lancers. When the Lancers were fifteen kilometers from the Alarion Militia and its sister unit, the 11th Arcturan Guards landed in a daring orbital drop behind the 6th Crucis Lancers.

Finding themselves trapped, the Crucis Lancers fled from the APMs, moving westward away from York's capital city. The Alarion and Carlisle regiments, being faster than the heavily laden 6th Crucis, were able to chase down and conduct flanking attacks against them until the Lancers withdrew to their Landing Zone and fled the planet.[5]

1st Battle for Tikonov[edit]

The Arcturan task force brought the Alarion APM along in its pursuit of Prince Victor. Their chase led to Tikonov on January 8th, 3065. On Tikonov, the unit fought fierce battles against Victor's allied forces. The allies began to lose battles as the battle wore on due to the mental state of their commander, the Prince. By February, a portion of the Allied task force led by Victor departed Tikonov. The Alarion APM and the rest of the task force gave chase.[6]

Thorin[edit]

By August 7th, 3065 the Alarion APM, as the 11th Arcturans' task force, reached Thorin, the most likely location of the Prince after his withdrawal from Tikonov. The 244th Division and the Outland Legion defended the planet, taking refuge in Ecol City, the planetary capital. For the next six months, the Alarion APM and the rest of the task force conducted a brutal offensive against the allied units. During this time, the unit began to accumulate damage from the fighting. Although the offensive had pinned two of the best Allied units on the planet, the goal of the attack, to capture Victor Steiner-Davion, was not realized. In addition, the offensive served to tie up the 11th Arcturan Battlegroup, itself one of the best performing Loyalist units.[7]

Shortly after Victor's forces quit the planet on January 26th, 3066, the Alarion APM was found to be too weakened to contribute to the ongoing pursuit. It and the Carlisle APM were left on Thorin to garrison the planet until the end of the war. After the war's end in mid-3067 the unit was sent home to Alarion.[8]

Notes[edit]

  • This unit, the Alarion Province Militia (of the Alarion system), is subordinate to the Alarion Province Militia, its parent formation. Due to assigned location on the planet Alarion and the naming structure of the subordinate formations, the unit has its location placed in parenthesis following the (otherwise) proper name.

Rules[edit]

When using the Alarion APM, to reflect the unit's mix of new and old equipment, one out of four 'Mechs assigned to the force may roll on the "C" rated equipment. Once the weight classes are randomly established, Alarion APM's player chooses which 'Mech will be rolled on the "C" rated equipment column. If this option is taken, the player must then choose a 'Mech to be rolled on the "F" rated equipment column.[15]
