Milton Hayes was the commanding officer of the Federated Suns' invasion of Hesperus II during the First Succession War.[1]

Rear Admiral Hayes, commanding a desperate mission codenamed Operation BRASS RING, was dispatched to the Hesperus II system with orders to steal as many supplies from the planetary factories as possible before destroying what remained. With no state of war existing between the Federated Suns and Lyran Commonwealth, and with Hayes' naval forces severely outgunned by Hesperus II's defenders, it was unclear how Hayes' operation would've aided his nation in one of its darkest hours. Commanding eight WarShips against a fleet three times the size, Hayes was unwilling to concede defeat without honestly attempting to accomplish the operation's goals. His plan to lure enough of the naval defenders out of position for his DropShips to make it planet-side proved slightly successful, although that success was the delivery of only a single doomed battalion of BattleMechs at the cost of three WarShips and a dozen escort DropShips. Having dealt almost no damage to either the orbital or planetary defenses of Hesperus, and aware that the time before Lyran reinforcements arrived was running out, Hayes gave the order for BRASS RING to retreat.[1]
Humiliated by their loss, BRASS RING's survivors lashed out at the worlds of Thorin and Rocky on their way back to Federated Suns space. On Thorin, Hayes' forces caused as much damage to economic and industrial infrastructure as possible, but a more confused situation on Rocky involving units of the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces and Rim Worlds Army remnants resulted in a nuclear exchange that annihilated several major cities and fatally poisoned the world's environment.[1]
