Roderick Axel was a Free Worlds League noble known for financing and personally advocating for the development of a special experimental variant of the Hermes II Battlemech, the HER-7S, in collaboration with Irian Technologies. The experiment proved unsuccessful as the resultant mech was too fragile and expensive to field, and with only three ever produced it sank into obscurity. It is thought that the experiment was seen by the IBMU as merely a way to gain experience with the cutting-edge technology used in the HER-7S at the Baron's expense.
