While they eat a barbecue, the family talked Kate about a plan they had to buy ticketts offplanet. Their plan was to attack a Mercenary 'Mech, taking it down, steal one of their weapons and later sell it to pay their passage. Kate agrees, and the next day, they depart together. They found the Mercenary between a battle, and managed to down and shut down the 'Mech after puting it on fire. But Jim and Kate cannot let the man die burned alive, so while his family attempts to steal the weapon, they rescued the Mercenary. He then offers them to get them out offplanet, and both kids accept. By then, Jim's family wasn't visible, and they appears to have been captured and executed by the fighters.
