Francis Ferdinand was the commanding officer of the 12th Atrean Dragoons at the onset of Anton's Rebellion, the Marik Civil War, in 3014.
He declared for Duke Anton Marik's rebels,[1] and the bulk of his regiment followed him although a small cadre including several senior officers (implicitly, including battalion commanders) chose not to support the duke.
Although Ferdinand commanded the rebellious 12th Atrean Dragoons at least up until the battle of Matheran, where he is last mentioned by name,[2] Gerhardt Hansen, an influential House Marik officer at the time, was named as the man who led the 12th Atrean Dragoons during the uprising and who would go on to reform them into the Hansen's Roughriders mercenary unit. Context suggests Hansen probably assumed command sometime during the fighting on Matheran. The fate of Francis Ferdinand is unknown.

- Francis Ferdinand is little more than a name dropped twice in a single sourcebook, Historical: Brush Wars. The fact that the unit he commanded would later become the famous Hansen's Roughriders mercenary unit is not mentioned in that book at all, nor is Gerhardt Hansen. The general impression is that the connection between Ferdinand's 12th Atrean Dragoons and Hansen's Roughriders was overlooked when the book was written.
