Lionel Schaffer was a senior officer in the Star League Defense Force's 238th Mechanized Infantry Division.[1]

In 2775, Colonel Schaffer and the remaining members of the 238th Mechanized Infantry Division were approached by agents of the Lyran Commonwealth hoping to hire experienced SLDF troops for their growing military needs. Some members of the 238th MI, led by Colonel David Cline, had been imprisoned for causing violence within the unit and the Lyrans offered to pay the rest of the 238th MI for their liberation. While Schaffer's soldiers refused the offer as a betrayal of Aleksandr Kerensky's ideals, other elements of the 238th MI secretly negotiated a separate arrangement where they would free Cline in return for Lyran BattleMechs and a mercenary contract of their own. While Schaffer's soldiers resisted these opportunists fiercely, Cline was ultimately freed to create the core of the Eighth Lyran Regulars, while the traitorous opportunists became the Iron Raven Mercenary Group. While it is not recorded if Schaffer survived the prison break himself, the survivors of his loyalists would join Kerensky when he left the Inner Sphere a few years later.[1]
