Never Trust the Recruitment Posters is a short story by James Kirtley that was published in the twelfth issue of Shrapnel.
Plot Summary[edit]
On 1 June 3025, the young MechWarrior Leonidas Simonides arrives on Galatea in the hope to become a professional mercenary. His first attempts of actively seeking job opportunities have limited success. Reality proves to be harsher than anticipated, as his small 'Mech and lack of discipline hindered his chances of being recruited. Despite meeting someone named "Carlyle", Leonidas feels that he is dismissed due to his youth and his struggle to articulate why he wants to be a MechWarrior.
In his desperation, Leonidas eventually signs up with the only unit interested in him, led by Colonel Stephen Lucius, who aims to establish a mercenary cooperative. Joining the newly formed unit, Leonidas embarks on their first mission, a pirate-hunting endeavor. The story finishes with Simonides beginning to feel a sense of belonging and realizing he has found what he was looking for.
