The Theban Legion was a paramilitary force led by Hector Rowe that would later become the first citizens of the Rim Worlds Republic.

History[edit]

The Terran Alliance assaulted Alexandria in 2237 and left more than three thousand rebel soldiers dead before they withdrew a year later. Hector Rowe, a university student who volunteered in the militia to defend his homeworld, became embittered and sought revenge. In 2239, he founded an anti-Alliance political club, the Theban Legion, which over the next five years grew into a 500-strong formidable paramilitary force.[1][2]

In mid-2244, the Theban Legion hijacked a commercial JumpShip fleet belonging to Skye Freight and Goods and made way to Lucianca where a small Terran reserve contingent of some 350 soldiers, the 151st Altairian Fusiliers, were still stationed waiting for transport home due to administrative errors. Disguised as their long-awaited relief convoy, the Legion slipped through the Fusiliers defenses and slaughtered over half of the garrison in the next two weeks. When one of the JumpShip captains managed to escape, the Legion knew people would find out what happened and they would be hunted mercilessly. The Skye merchantmen were given the option of joining the Legion or dying with the rest of the Fusiliers, and they set course for deep space after stripping the garrison bare.[2][3]

On their way out to the Periphery, the Theban Legion behaved like pirates in every way, raiding various fringe worlds for food, livestock, spare parts, and enslaving women. Eventually, they disappeared into the Dark Nebula and and settled on the inhabitable world on the other side, which Rowe named Apollo. On 8 September 2250, the Rim Worlds Republic was born, and the slaves were offered citizenship in the Republic in return for contracted marriages. The rest were relegated to servitude, known as the helot labor class.[3][4]
