When Harsila took command of the 1st Oriente Hussars and a battalion commander slot opened, he pushed Kendal to take the position. Already a first rate officer, Harsila then spent the next five years grooming Kendal for regimental command, it was expected Kendall would take over the 3rd Oriente Hussars when Colonel Vandy Jolibois retired. That was not to be however, command of the Third passed to another Simon Dumoss and Kendal stayed on with 2nd Battalion[1]
