A veteran of the Capellan Confederation's Ares Titans, Tatarinov's bravery and talents eventually earned her a posting to the elite Red Lancers. Another twenty years of serving with distinction resulted in Tatarinov attaining command of the Lancers' Second Battalion, which was christened Nikolina's Nightmares in her honor. As Tatarinov aged and her skills began to degrade, she requested a transfer to a "less famed" unit in order to avoid tarnishing the Lancers flawless reputation. The Chancellor recognized Tatarinov's selfless decision to leave the Red Lancers and rewarded her with command of the Prefectorate Guard in 2781, where she quickly began to run circles around the members of her new unit.[1]
Colonel Tatarinov sought to change the Guard's traditional, low-intensity mindset by making the unit more focused on performing in actual combat scenarios. This desire to improve the troops of the Prefectorate Guard resulted in Tatarinov's requisition of a combat posting outside of the Capellan Commonality and the request was granted when the Guard was dispatched to Tyrfing in 2788. There was one condition to this new assignment which Tatarinov was happy to agree to: all of the Guard's aerospace and infantry assets remained behind to defend the Confederation's government.[1]
Unfortunately for the Prefectorate Guard, many of its soldiers were older MechWarriors who were shocked to be sent so far from their usual post and assigned with duties far more difficult than they were used to. While Tatarinov's men fought with courage and determination in order to prove themselves to the Chancellor, the brutal nature of the fighting on Tyrfing only deepened their preference for ceremonial duties over combat duties, badly undermining Tatarinov's original intentions.[2]
