The Sons and Daughters of the Covenant was an organization whose members were direct descendants of people who fought for Northwind independence during the Amaris Civil War.[1]

History[edit]

Amaris Civil War[edit]

When Stefan Amaris launched Operation APOTHEOSIS to take the Terran Hegemony on 27 December 2766,[2] Republican forces attacked Northwind, crippling three Highlander regiments on the first day and driving the survivors into hiding. By the end of the week, the world was effectively under Amaris thumb; however, the Republican forces were only partially successful. As Northwind was a staunchly pro-Cameron world, the occupiers were met with derision and hostility by the locals. The Highlanders quickly formed resistance groups—the most united planetary resistance within the Hegemony. Despite Amaris moving more and more forces onto the planet to fight the insurgents, he never subdued them. The population continued to resist, and with the help of the Secret Fleet, the resistance was always well manned and supplied.[3]

In 2775, the Star League Defense Force finally arrived to liberate the planet: as soon the Third Army arrived in-system, the Northwind Covenanters resistance movement struck hard against the Amaris forces and government with every man they could muster, preoccupying them so they were unable to respond effectively to the landing SLDF forces. In the first few days, the Amaris troops launched nuclear attacks against LXIX Corps and some of the largest cities on planet before losing access to their strategic reserves. Later they used civilians to shield their movements, enraging the population even more. By the end of June, the Amaris garrison was broken, but not before the Covenanters also ceased to be an effective force. The remaining Amaris forces entrenched inside the planet's lone Castle Brian were cleared out by LXIX Corps by the beginning of 2776.[4]

First Succession War[edit]

By the turn of the twenty-ninth century, the original Covenanters were rapidly aging and dying, and the biological children and grandchildren of Northwind's freedom fighters wanted to preserve their traditions and accomplishments. Thus, the Sons and Daughters of the Covenant (SDC) was formed in 2801, or possibly after several local patriotic groups merged in 2804. Their strict guidelines stipulated that the ancestor of the SDC member had to have been physically on Northwind at the time of the Coup, or had been dispatched to Northwind prior to March 2775 and stayed on-world longer than thirty days in active opposition to the Amaris occupational government. The SDC wanted their organization to be made up of individuals who could clearly trace their lineage back to those who participated in the resistance movement and not merely those who were a part of the SLDF force that helped liberate the world.[1]

Second and Third Succession Wars[edit]

By 2822, Northwind was under Capellan Confederation control.[5] Over time, the SDC started advocating for Northwind independence, putting them at odds with the Capellan government and being investigated extensively by the Maskirovka for allegedly seditious acts. Membership in the SDC became something of a fashionable choice for those who opposed the Capellan's increasing regulation and interference in planetary matters, but they focused their efforts on grassroots political action instead of taking up arms like the Covenanters. While the increased scrutiny prompted many to give up their membership, a century later, the SDC experienced a resurgence in the latter part of the Third Succession War as the SDC was being seen largely as a social organization.[1]

Republic Age[edit]

By 3090, the Sons and Daughters of the Covenant had remained a moderately sized organization with chapters in every nation all across the Inner Sphere. Its members included Northwind's political and military leaders, active and retired Northwind Highlanders, and notable personalities in the innermost circles of the Capellan Confederation and Federated Suns.[1]
