Hooke's Billmen were a mercenary unit employed by Fontaine Marik in early 3152.[1] Much of the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey had been on edge since Ludwig Steiner had been promoted to Margrave of Florida Theater in 3151[2] and the subsequent Lyran recapture of Bolan later that same year.[3] Dixie had been left nearly defenseless by its Clan Wolf occupiers, and Marik realized it was a prime target for Lyran invasion. He instead chose to beat them to the punch by deploying the Billmen to capture it for House Marik.[1]
Two companies of Billmen made planetfall in February 3152; however, by the end of the following month, they still had not reported back. Tamarind considered the mercenary unit lost. Later reports, however, revealed that the Billmen were not only still intact, but had defeated the Wolves and reclaimed the world – for House Steiner. Citing a loophole in their contract, the Billmen had switched sides and turned Dixie over to the Commonwealth. Marik sent a battalion of the Fourth Tamarind Regulars to punish the unit for their betrayal. When the Regulars arrived, though, the Billmen had been replaced as Dixie's garrison with the First Buena Jaegers. Unable to destroy the unit, Fontaine Marik placed a bounty on Hooke's Billmen.[1]
