History
Born in 3035, he was raised in a foster home with his younger brother Andrew. His gift for mathematics enabled him to obtain a degree from the New Avalon Institute of Science in June of 3052.
Leonard wasn't a MechWarrior or soldier, like his father and siblings. Lacking any desire to fight, he skipped as much mandatory military training as he could, pursuing a degree as an engineer working on several key projects for the NAIS. His rejection of the military life made him the black sheep of his family.
Only in his last years did he begin to feel something was missing in his life. He began dating some of his coworkers, hoping to marry and begin a family, but never had a chance.[1]
Leonard's learning of his father and aunt Jodi's deaths on Tukayyid shook him very deeply, but their deaths were only the first; unknown to Leonard, his family was his doom. One of his ancestors, Franklin Hallis, left the Inner Sphere three centuries earlier with Operation Exodus and helped to form Clan Wolverine.[2]
Despite the distant and indirect relationship, for Clan Steel Viper and Clan Nova Cat, who killed his father and aunt, Bordon Hallis and Jodi Ann Hallis, respectively, in the Battle of Tukayyid, it was enough for both Clans to engage in a Trial of Bloodright, essentially a reward laid out by Nicholas Kerensky to hunt down and annihilate all descendants of Clan Wolverine.[3]
The Clan Stars that had killed Bordon and Jodi Ann began their manhunt. After an information raid on Morges, they uncovered Kristin and her siblings' existence, and they tracked them down. Kristin was the first target. They killed her on Rutbak, and later went for Leonard.[3] Luckily for Leonard, both Clan units, after killing his sister Kristin, found him working at something called Kohler Project on planet Northwind, garrisoned by three regiments of the Northwind Highlanders, preventing the Clan units from attacking frontally. In fact, the Nova Cats' first attempt to kill him failed and all were arrested.[4]
Leonard was put under ComStar protection at the ComStar Compound on Northwind – ironically, the same place where the Nova Cats were held. A team of Steel Vipers on foot infiltrated the complex, finally reaching him.
Death
Initially, Leonard refused to fight the Clanners, cowering under a table, but after hearing about their parents being killed by the Clanners, Leonard pull out a needler pistol from under his clothes and, enraged, tried to kill them but was killed first.[5]
Legacy
After Leonard's death, the Nova Cat captives managed to escape in the confusion, and both Clan units left Northwind and went to Zurich, aiming for the last known alive Hallis, Andrew. His unit helped him set an ambush aiming to destroy both Clan units. As Andrew was seething with rage and wanted to avenge their siblings, the ambush failed and Andrew was killed too, putting an end to all known members of House Hallis.[6]
Personality
Leonard can be described only as "meek", very shy and timid around members of the opposite sex. Lacking confidence in social gatherings and only comfortable in his office, he was jealous of his brother and sister's lives full of adventure and travel, but he never dared to explore the Inner Sphere.[7]
Physical appearance
Middle-aged, Leonard was considered by most of his colleagues as a gnat of a man. Skinny, he was always wearing thick wire-rimmed glasses and his sandy blond hair was beginning to recede.
