Overview
The First Fleet was a part of the Star League Defense Force Naval Command.[1]
History
The First Fleet was responsible for the protection of the First Lord and the SLDF High Command. This meant that the First Fleet spent much of its time deployed around Terra and the worlds of the Terran Hegemony, although only the three command squadrons were permanently assigned to the First Fleet; to keep the combat edge of the First Fleet high, the other vessels and squadrons that made up the First Fleet were rotated periodically with commands from other Fleets in more active areas.[1]
In addition to protecting the First Lord and the High Command, the First Fleet was intended to allow the High Command to manage the Star League, the military and any potential conflicts no matter their current location; to facilitate this, all four command vessels, the SLS Terra, Star League, McKenna's Pride and Enterprise were fitted out with specialist equipment to allow them to function as specialised command vessels. This equipment included a substantial array of intelligence gathering and communication elements, and allowed the vessels to act as mobile command headquarters.[1] Together with the two lead vessels of the Second Fleet, the SLS New Earth and the SLS Caph, these six vessels formed the Star League Emergency Command Post Network, or SLECoP.[2]
The First Fleet gave up two squadrons to assist operations in the Periphery during the Periphery Uprising[2] - the Commanding General's Squadron and the Escort Squadron - and the remainder of the First Fleet was effectively destroyed during the opening stages of the Amaris Civil War, although the First Fleet inflicted a substantial and disproportionate level of damage against the Rim Worlds Republic forces before being destroyed.[1] The First Fleet vessels that survived the initial battles eventually combined forces with the Second Fleet under Admiral Vincenzo McTiernan to form a part of the covert SLDF fleet which continued to operate from hidden bases such as Freedom Station within the Hegemony for the remainder of the war.[2]
